J-20... The New Generation Fighter II

Something caught my eyes while studying this picture :

Anyone knows how the air flow into the engines from the air intakes ??

It just looks impossible to have any space to duct the air into the engines.
It looks as if the air flow into the weapon bay then into the engines! (or the engine fan blades are right behind the central weapon bay itself!) which is kinda absurd.

F-22 is still the Bugatti Veryon and nothing come close, so until T-50 and/or J-20 materialized into actual combat unit, good luck in shaking more budget from the Congress.

There is also the difficulty of reopening the production line, and the money sapping F-35 project coupled with the budget cut.

The F-22 uses and "S" intake for stealth (prevents the fanblades from exposure). It curves around the side weapons bay.

Actually, if you look closely, F-22 has THREE WEAPON BAYS . One in the center (the largest one) and TWO on the side.

Notice the "Side Bays" is capable of carrying 2 x AIM-9M.

-sigh- Yes I know there are side bays, but for my conversation with roger only the single central bay was relevant. I've mentioned that the J-20 will probably have F-22 style weapon bays, with a single wide bay with two side ones each holding an SRAAM each.

It might not look it, but it's there.

Here's a cut out of the F-35B's s duct -- the F-22 is similar.

Well if the picture is, in fact, real, I'd say that the J-20 is a bit smaller than we thought it was. Instead of being 23 meters long it is only about 19-20 meters long, slightly longer than the Raptor and Pak-Fa.

Anything to get rid of the notion that the J-20 is somehow a China's stealth F-111 equivalent. Ever since the first images, the raging debate has been how China will use its new toy. Finally pinning down the size won't resolve that, but it would help a lot.

I haven't found a good pic for it, but in this model pic you can clearly see enough space for a S-duct:

If you compare the intakes with the exhaust nozzles you'd notice that the exhaust nozzles are much closer together. The intakes curl inward.

Well if you think about the stealth F-111 and the stealth MIG-31 ideas they are, in my opinion, pretty ludicrous. Both planes use outdated concepts. The idea that the Chinese Air Force would go to all this trouble to create a strike aircraft (one featuring delta-canard configuration) is... I don't know how to put it politely.

I agree, but it isn't that ludicrous to have a stealthy F-111 equivalent -- there's still a place for that kind of aircraft imho.
J-20 is not as large as the F-111 but its obviously designed for good fast and high altitude supersonic performance, and strong manouverability with the delta canard configuration, all moving tailfins and eventual TVC. I don't often agree with Carlo Kopp, but his idea that J-20 is similar to an FB-22 with a primary air to air mission isn't un...meritable.

(If you check out the wiki article on J-20, they've got the idea that J-20 is a stealthy interceptor like the Mig-31... dongfeng better write an article on sinodefence for wikipedia to cite :/ )
