Those are really clear nice pics...So excited!~~~ ^^ The J20 looks like a black-bluish color, but it's not stealthy yet?

Now the J20 had tested fly......I wonder what will Gates think while he still staying in China and watch this...not quite happy though.

well, maybe Gates feel very sad.
The US is also frustrated with China's intransigence towards meaningful strategic dialogue on international security concerns.:p

In my opinion, PLAAF should be looking at a good mix of fighters. When it comes to J-10s, I would say that PLAAF should go for J-10Bs when it matures and is on full-scale production. Preferably around (1100) J-10Bs, (700) J-11Bs, (500) JF-17s (If PLAAF actually wants them), (300) J-20s would put PLAAF in the top three 'Air Dominance' air forces in the world. And when it comes to PLAN, it should be understood that with 6-8 aircraft carriers, they should hold an fleet of atleast (600) J-15s!

Unlikely, for a man at his post he'd have known about J-20 already - Pentagon would already have compiled necessary "reading material" for him before he left the US for this trip, which'd include an estimated flight test schedule and more...if not, how'd he face those ravenous reporters? Remember, even those Chinese spokespersons getting hounded by reporters during daily press conferences.

Not to mention the whole "muscle flexing" idea were speculating in the media days before SecDef Gates depart the US, no way he's caught off hand - everybody knows China gonna show Gates something new on this trip, and a tour to the 2nd Artillery HQ ain't so.

LOL
stop dreaming man! China's doesn't need that much planes and especcially doesn't need 6 CBG housing 600(!) j-15.

And China allready is in the top 3 air dominance forces in the world.

This is an interesting picture, as it shows how the rudders are in sync with the canards to provide additional lift for the plane.

Gates made some very interesting comments while talking to the media.

According to him (i saw it on google news aggregate), apparently every civilian leader appeared surprised when he brought up the topic of the new plane. As gates put it, it appeared as though they had no knowledge about the plane (including hu jinto).

What do people make of this?
Gates is kidding / the answer was lost in the translation/ all Chinese leaders were just having fun with gates?

The actual suggestion that chinese government did not know what the military was doing is quite absurd since there was reported to the some high level officials present at the take off. Also, the award to the engine designer is also a kinda give away.

So did gates just misunderstood (perhaps deliberately)?

They're mostly contributing to the pitching up. It looks like the rudders are not mechanically linked with each other and they can be independent in their movement. In this case, both the rudders are turned inward.

USA Today says Hu personally confirms the test flight with Gates. Gates even asked if
the test flight was timed with his visit.
