Re: New Generation Fighter

The more I think about it, the more I think it won't be a stealthy flanker. Huitong's site says conventional layout. That just means it's not a canard delta. The role demanded sounds more like F-35 (adaptable, navy capable). But SAC has experience mostly with twin-engines. So I expect the J-16 to look something like a cross between T-50 and F-35.

Essentially a twin-engined light fighter?

No, I don't think F-35 is light. I mean an twin-engined aircraft (similar to T-50) emphasizing the strike role, not the air superiority role (just like F-35). Maybe like this

Re: New Generation Fighter

There is a heavy fighter program going on at Shenyang SAC 601 and it is multi-role type with two seats in tandem and twin engines. And this time it is not just the "fanboys-inventions" either. Does the term "PAK-FA-Shan" mean anything to anyone here? It may relate to what Challenge mentioned earlier as "Sin-91." Is there perhaps Russian collaboration on this Shenyang project, and using technology from the PAK-FA T-50 prototype?

Okay we are straying too far into fanboy territory now. We can accept that perhaps Shenyang has a "Super-Flanker" in development, if not for the PLA but perhaps only for export. That does not mean it's true necessarily. But huitong is rarely wrong.

Nonetheless...back to the J-20

Re: New Generation Fighter

There are some folks here that claim that the term "JXX" is an invention of the "fanboys". I will have to counter such statements by acknowledging that it was the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) that coined the term "XXJ" and it was from this that the common now-used (and more correct) term of "JXX" is the preferred term. However, the designation J-20 itself has been questioned, but it is based on solid information from Chinese sources. So there is not a "J-14 'JXX' " nor a "J-13 'JXX' " There was an older design from Shenyang for a J-13 but that was eventually cancelled, and has nothing to do with the current JXX/J-20 nor the competition between Chengdu and Shenyang for the right to develop and build the J-20. But the current JXX is designated J-20 by the PLAAF.
