Re: New Generation Fighter

Holy OMG I just realized that!!! Man PLAAF actually do have a sense of humour... J-XX = J-20... I suppose the eventual 6th gen plane would be called J-XXX... heh.

@danielchin: I don't understand what you're saying -- are you implying because the test pilot's previously tested 3rd (4th) gen planes meaning that he somehow can't test 4th (5th) gen planes? I'm pretty sure a test pilot for any generation of fighter aircraft would have flown aircraft of previous generations... (that being said I think this article isn't talking of the J-20 because it implies it's already had its first flight. If it had the news would be all over the forums)

To be fair it is all over CD and FY... just that most people think that the J-X is just the J-15.

Furthermore 2nd and 3rd generation planes were made when the dominant belief was that air power alone can win you wars. This was before Vietnam where they found that air power, while powerful offensive weapons, was not versatile in all terrains and could not substitute for land forces that could hold and defended territory. That helped encourage the shift from quantity to quality.

vietnam was a country without airseport if countrys like china russia or usa go in war quantity of planes will olso be as importand as quality

Re: New Generation Fighter

Thats not true. If production time is taken as a reference to how useful a plane is... Then by all means, stop all R&D and creating of 4th generation planes and go back to MiG19, MiG21 and F4, A4 aircrafts.

Also we do not know how expensive it would be for daily maintenance/ repair cost of the aircraft (unless there are very credible source indicating it). Third, 4th generation plane and 5th generation planes are of course more expensive as compared to second and third generation fighters. But if you were to give me a choice, I would go for a smaller and leaner air force rather than a massive and quantitatively huge air force.

if countrys like china russia or usa go to war quantity of planes will olso be as importand as quality and thats why olso production time is important becase when your up to a equel force both sides will lose many planes an in time like that a fast production time can safe your ass

That still doesn't resolve the inability for a plane to loiter (which would be the only reason you'd need a higher quantity) or handle all terrain. Anyways, we're going off topic.

Re: New Generation Fighter

I'm not sure if this CGI is new. It's from Gaoshan.

I think it's pretty much conclusive now that one of the prototypes look like this. I'm more curious about the other prototype.... could it be one with a more radical, revolutionary design? Perhaps this one is more maneuverable but the other one is more stealthy.

Apparently most likely canard with v tails. Though some speculated that it will be side intakes like this one:

Top view does remind me a bit of dark sword, maybe that's where the artist drew his inspirations from. I just hope we won't be disappointed when the real thing is unveiled.

Other prototype? I think you're getting mixed up with the idea of YF-22 vs YF-23 for the USAF's ATF prooject in the eighties...
There is only the J-20 for the PLAAF and having another prototype with a different configuration basically means you're building a wholly different aircraft.

fanboys make up stuff like this all the time. Tune it down a little bit.

to be fair, most people on those forums don't know what they are talking about.

"According to information disclosed at a research institute, China’s 4th-generation fighter will use the plasma stealth technology, its performance will exceed the foreign serving four generations fighter plane.

The photo shows the information from a Chinese research institute:

…However, due to the fact of the gap between the current H4B-A3-2 program and foreign active-duty 4-th generations fighter palne in the low detectability indexes, our research institute’s topic of high-pressure arc air ionization application Testing in some strong reflex zone is timely and necessary. This technology, once put into use, will enable our 4-th generations fighter plane to reach finally foreign active-duty ones.To use specifically…"
