that's y you have NCO's... the real backbone of any army.

btw its down to two years now for the volunteers. German army is 9months though, wonder if there is anyone with shorter service than that.

9 months! God! What can they learn in 9 months? Man... these countries are really taking defences in a very lax kind of way.

In NZ.the length of compulsory military training was narrowed down to 3months during the 50's/ In the late 50's and 60's it was ballotedby birth date. Everyone had to register at 18yrs. IT was the only lottery that Ive ever won:D

It's decided it's now going down to 6 month. Kinda useless. Lots of people are pushing for a professional only military. And really it's not that much about defending the country right now in the current environment. The most important part is probably the most of the professional soldiers are recruited out of the conscript pool.

lol they can replace it with a voluntary reserve system. there are bright sides with joining as a conscript or joining the reserve, aside from acquiring the skills and character, it helps you develop a social network that might come in handy later in the civie side.

they are not the one that will do most of the fighting. It will be the ordinary Chinese army infantrymen.

As you can see they are quite poorly equipted.
The bulk of infantry is not very mobile. They can't be deployed in significant numbers oversees or by air. So if they do face a war, it will be on home soil or in a directly neighboring country. That changes the whole equation. They don't need to be well equipped. Also they will outnumber any opponent 10:1. They could win it with knives.

Hey guys does anyone know the time table (if there is one) for completely phasing out the old equipment like steel helmets, web gear, type 81's and tanks like the type 69?

A little known fact that the PLA also runs the fire dept. I thought they only ran the PAP forrest fire units and towns and cities managed the fire dept.

The reason that old equipments are still used today is that China, despite its growing military budget, still can't provide top notch equipments for every soldier of her large standing military (that is in fact true for all militaries in the world). Besides the gear used in training may not accurately reflect the current capabilities of PLA soldiers since the use of advanced gears may be considered wasteful for second or third line soldiers. I think that a old gears will always be used to train new recruits.
