A New Cold War?

I also think China needs to further develop its own shale industry. China has significant shale deposits so with the proper technology it could become a major producer on its own right. The problem is current technology uses a lot of water and the Chinese already have water issues in the north, where coal and IIRC shale deposits are, as it is.

I think China should keep a low profile for now, within the 1st Island chain, or else they risk overreach. The Japanese also tried controlling the entirety of Southeast Asia and IMHO this is one of the reasons for their failure. At that time they had no other option because they needed oil and rubber. But right now this area is of little consequence. China is a major land power and has a decent air force. But they lack the logistics for long distance prolonged campaigns. So if they want to fight this on their own terms, so they can win, they should force anyone wanting to pick a fight with them to fight it on their own turf. i.e. as close to China as possible. It is perfectly fine to make investments in these places. But both those countries not only are Muslim majorities culturally a lot different from the rest of East Asia but each comes with their own issues. Indonesia has enough issues keeping itself integrated and stable as it is. Getting a military presence in there would not only alarm the Australians further, causing them to make more concessions to the USA, it would also put China in a shaky security position IMHO.

What you mean by staying low No one here is talking about annexation or invasion China has been trading with Melacca since ancient time China could occupy Melacca then Admiral Cheng visited Melacca 5 or 6 times with armada that overwhelm anything those indigenous people can muster But he didn't invade or occupy Melacca

If anyone try to cut off the SLOC line in emergency China can demand save passage for troop from Thailand to Malaysia just like the German did with Switzerland in WWII I doubt Thai will refuse it
They are building railway as we speak now from Kunming to Thai border and from there plan is afoot to build the connecting line to Bangkok and KL

What you mean by saying Malaysia are Moslem But that does not prevent Chinese from living in harmony with the Moslem FYI 30% of Malaysia population are Chinese with their own Chinese school system and sofar the pact held I don't see what is the problem with China gaining influence in SEA It is their historic back yard after all. The last 200 years is anomaly and thing are returning to normal whether west like it or not it is inconsequential

Australia is non factor here She just scare to death now that China is on the ascendancy These people need to change their mind set or they will be left out in the next Asian Century.

They are paranoia anything other than western supremacy scare them because they think everyone is after them For what Bondi beach? or hole in the ground ?
Asia is getting rich not from robbing and colonization but from producing good that the world want

Oct 14, 2018so how do you in this sense:
(I mean technically, your "oil equivalent" is exactly ...)
?

now,

about 91 (unit as right above), so it's almost half

just saying

(38e9/167) is for a whole year, (38e9/167)/365 is about 62341 (sixty-two thousand etc.),

while you claimed one order of magnitude more

There is additional natural gas capacity from Russia as well.

That is 600 000 barrel / day.
Oil equivalent .

I'll rephrase:
China may import from Russia, by the pipeline I talked about, 38e9 cubic meters of gas yearly,
which is an equivalent of about 227545e3 barrels of oil yearly = about 62 thousand barrels daily,
not your "600 000 barrel / day"

any opinions here on an Australian base to be built somewhere in Admiralty Islands?
(LOL all I would be able to say about that area is it'd been a German colony)

160(cubic meter of natural gas in each barrel)
365 (days of year)
160*365=57600 <-yearly cubic meter of natural gas for 1 barrel / day oil capacity

38*10^9/(5.8*10^4)=38*10^5/5.8
It is more than 6*10^5 without using calculator.
The numbers can have +/-10% uncertainty, due to grades.

China natural gas consumption is 237 billion cubM/year, production is 147 b cubM/year.
Oil production is 3.8 million barrel/day, consumption is 12.8 million barrel/day.

China can mop up Russia whole oil production, and the full natural gas export.

please note it's yes–no question; I'm not going to respond
