Un-frigging-believable.

They are planning a twelve year window with no ASM for their frigates.

And what of the Darings? The ASM they have is the older harpoons...so are they going to lose it too? IOW, NO ASM AT ALL for the Royal Navy surface combatants?

@Obi Wan Russell ...is this true?

What are they smoking over there at Whale Island and Northwood?

We had to fight like banjees to get decent ASMs back on the LCS, but the US Navy plan with the tactical Tomahawks and the LRASM was already in place and the Burkes will have those...now the lCS and FFGs will also have a very decent ASM.

But for the Royal Navy to loose ASM from 2018 to 2030?

I am shocked!
Its a bit shocking for sure. I think its budget crazyness. If is is Locally made it seems to go ahead. Imports seem to be delayed or cancelled. Building warships gets them jobs but whats the point if the ships are unarmed! Perhaps the Brit Gov thinks if a shooting war begins, they can quickly get their ASM's from the manufacturers or borrow some from the inventory of allies. If they have no plans i agree they must be smoking something

I'm not! UK has been gutless for a few years now. Same with many European countries. These politicians are very short sighted.. The cannot just rely on the USN to loan muscle everytime they need it.

At any rate, this is just a tiny symptom of a much bigger picture. It is a forgone conclusion that the era of 'Western' dominanace has past it's apogee and on the decline.

After many centuries of global dominance, economic and by nature military power will shift from Europe to Asia in the coming decades.
I guess if they thought you had been right, they wouldn't talk 'deep strike' off two supercarriers (which they're building) using STOVL aircraft (which they're buying); they want to 'project power' this way, you know

So are you saying just because UK has a yet to be operational carrier (vs NONE) and one building automatically negates my point about global economic and military power shifting from West to East? LOL

The US is the ONLY country tipping the balance. If you strictly compare Europe vis a vis Asia, the trending is pretty much a forgone conclusion.

The mighty navies of the Dutch East Indies, the British Empire, France, Portugal, Spanish etc is but a tiny tiny shadow of their former selves. You don't need to be a historian to realize that. I am merely stating facts.

A guide to the UK’s RC-135 Rivet Joint surveillance Aircraft

The United Kingdom purchased three KC-135R aircraft for conversion to RC-135W Rivet Joint standard under the Airseeker project, let’s take a closer look.

Acquisition of the three aircraft is budgeted at £634m. The aircraft form No. 51 Squadron RAF, based at RAF Waddington along with the RAF’s other ISTAR assets. They are expected to remain in service until 2045.

LOL my sarcasm didn't appear to work

in the real world, not in the world of 1990s planners by now retired, the RN needs a completely different force structure, as I said Aug 19, 2017
...

I would've thought the RN, knowing its budget and manpower limitations Dec 8, 2016

, should've concentrated on its ability to protect the traffic and the UK interests (Cod Wars come to my mind) in the Northern Atlantic; instead, though, the RN concentrates on fanciful stuff of dubious combat value = two carriers with F-35Bs but no AShMs and no escort vessels with AShMs ... just imagine if they had entered the Persian Gulf at the time of hostilities
and now specifically add sea-mines from Apr 5, 2017
hmmmm
Possible future capability Minelaying
Notes An absurd capability gap, but UK has no existing stock of naval mines

I don't have time for this right now, just noticed:
"Core: Capable of fitting hull-mounted sonar."
isn't it funny?
"core" ASW requirement to be "capable of fitting hull-mounted sonar" ...
but yeah, this is what a quarter of bil pounds buys ...

kinda beamy thing ... anyway, even if they installed the max. amount of tubes
(24 = 16 VLS cells + 8 AShMs), and they obviously wouldn't do it as just the armament might then eat up the allocated funds Today at 7:53 AM,
the ship would be still underarmed: Jul 5, 2017
(as we on the SDF know, also 4k-displacing Type 054A has 40 tubes)

Cool project but JMSDF is getting about the same as the 'ideal' on the video for twice the price. It's only possible for this amount if PRC would make it for them.
