I just received my "Foreign Media Invitation" ... so slowly the journey can start! :)

Any additional hints and advises from you?

Best,
Deino

+1 to jobjed saying that you should remember to buy and drink lots of water, and to bring your own toilet paper if attending public toilets for no. 2s. Better yet, avoid going to no. 2s in public toilets in general.

Otherwise, if you want to continue to be active on Twitter and so on while you're there, you should consider using a VPN. If you're on android, a good mobile VPN I can recommend is Opera VPN, worth downloading and learning to navigate before you get there.

Lastly, I suppose is to keep an open mind and prepare for a bit of culture shock, assuming you've never been to China before or other less developed Asian or Southeast Asian countries. While southern China is definitely among the more developed part of the country with world class infrastructure in many respects, there are still some day to day behaviours that are from a different era given the nature of the country's economic development over the last few decades.
Try some local food, and take lots of pictures (of the exhibits and planes too!) ;)

Is it ok to have a VPN installed on your phone or laptop when visiting China? Plus, wouldn't the "Great Firewall" detect the VPN service intself and block it? This is something I also wanted to know before ever visiting China. Don't want to be violating any laws by having anything unacceptible installed on my phone or laptop.

It's not uncommon. I've used it fairly regularly when I visit.

I'm fairly certain there aren't any laws banning them and lots of foreigners use them to access their preferred services

This is not a joke and I can vouch for that advice from personal experience.
To emphasize how not a joke it is I once had to rush to the bathroom on one of those old green trains (think squat toilets on shaky carts) and forgot to bring toilet paper with me. While trying to figure out my conundrum inside the bathroom (still in squat position) a queue formed and some people started to get agitated. Finally one of the train officers knocked on my door to see what was going on and I had to embarrassingly tell her in front of the crowd that I forgot to bring toilet paper. So yeah. Bring toilet paper with you at all times.

I learned this the hard way after going to a nice restaurant. :)

Don't use a service that uses OpenVPN, it is blocked. Go for ones that use other protocol types
