Z-10 thread

Attack helos typically want higher cal cannons for range and punch. The bigger and heavier the round, the longer the effective range and harder it hits, which works equally well no matter if you are targeting heavy armor or light infantry, not that the cannon was ever designed to take out single infantrymen.

The cannon on an attack helo is really a surgical weapon and tend to be pretty accurate, which is also why they typically only carry hundreds of rounds, not thousands, and why attack helo pilots always fire the cannon in short, controlled bursts instead of just hosing all over the place. If an attack helo wants to do area suppression to deal with a large number of scattered light targets, it won't waste time and rounds plinking away with it's cannon, it will let rip with a salvo of rockets, which can easily cover an area the size of several football pitches, that's why they carry those.

Another reason you would not really want to go below 20mm is because it's better to overkill than be caught short. If you only equip your attack helo with 14.5mm, and it runs into a situation where 14.5mm just doesn't cut it, its screwed. Whereas 20mm would work just as well against targets that only need 14.5mm.

Another lovely post. What you've said got me thinking, and it's true. Footages of attack helos usually show them pop a burst at the target and it always land where they want them. And let's not forget that heavy attack helos such as the Apache are known as tank-killers for a reason too. if anyone's going to equip anything lighter, it's already for much lesser target, and they can use the .50cal or even the 7.62 from the windows. and usually you find these on black hawks and other transports

any info about the quality of WZ-10 optic system? if you look at the video of Apache target killing of iraqi journalist (courtesy of wikileak),most of them has no idea they been track.everyone in the ground caught by surprise.
back in the vietnam war, US troop or vietcong realized the present of helos particularly, the UH-1 just by hearing her signature "flap, flap, flap" rotor sound.
fast forward to 2002,the video show most the iraqi civilian and journalist do not even hear the helos signature noise when they are attack,.it show just how good was AH-64 optical tracking system.

In urban environment attack has many advantages, especially the noise level that's why in Iraq they could take out people on the ground

Shift over to Afghanistan and the same Apache helos have been taken out by RPG

I think it's impossible to find out such capabilitys with regards to WZ10 unless we see pilot interviews

Looks like WZ-10 is already fully mature and served in significant numbers, mass equipped the PLA army.

Another legendary product of PLA which we only known the full story and info now long after the development has ended few years ago. I believe CCTV will soon unveil a documentary about the development story of WZ-10 helo to operational fighting unit.

Look similar? I think the thread for modern HMDS is to have large display. Even now every modern fighter jet has large glass cockpit display but does it make them all the same? No..

Actually, I will prefer the chopper used 14.5mm instead of heavy 30mm or 25mm.. If you want to take out an heavy armour, essentially, an anti-tank missile will be a better choice. Machine gun are more for light armour truck, cars and personnel attack.

With an 14.5mm, advantage will be a lighter recoil compare to bigger calibre, meaning more accuracy. Smaller calibre will also mean lighter guns carry, easier to handle and more rounds carry.

I can see the large calibre of 25mm and 30mm on attack helo being overkill.

Rotary cannons like Are very accurate killers especially if they have a high rate of rotation. The Centrifugal force of the rotation acts as a counter too shift in aiming like a gyroscope. They like too get on target and stay there moving the weapon when firing is actually a issue not having it move on you. you are correct on lighter weight and ammo capacity. However Overkill is a sure kill and in a target rich environment you want too save your missiles for the best targets.
