Yuan Class AIP & Kilo Submarine Thread

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

Hi,

Are there not a risk of spying? Especially when they visit the latest subs?

Spying is an ugly word, so let's call it confidence building, shall we? PLAN extended a good gesture to the US military, and it should be applauded. There's no reason why US and China can't share the Pacific Commons, so efforts to reduce tension and increase goodwill are important and welcomed. The US Navy just showed PLA officers our front line supercarrier, USS George Washington, and I hope we do more exchanges; Arleigh Burk for 052C; Sea Wolf for 093; F-22 for J-20; B1 for H6K; ..., etc.

The Deputy Chief of US Naval Operations visited another PLAN sub. He also inspected frigate 530, Xuzhou, and took a ride on a 056. Yesterday, he visited the destroyer 150, a 054A frigate, and 333, a sub with AIP.

Excellent. These cross nation visits will do nothing but good.

The Chinese have been aboard US nuclear carriers, US AEGIS destroyers in both their bridge and CIC, and many other US Naval vessels. Seeing it reciprocated is a good thing.

Both sides benefit fromg etting to know their counterparts personally and getting a feel for the vessels, their crews, their moral, etc. Lessens tensions and the likelihood for conflict due to some hothead.

If you will believe a man still living in the stone age, Chang Zheng 221 is Type 039A 331, same class as 333.

They are not showing PLAN's newest submarines, since 长城221号 was visited last year by another USN delegation. But they are not showing Type 039B, which is also stationed at Daxiedao with 22 Submarine Flotilla.

By the way, the original Type 039 is evidently a slightly stretched version of the French AGOSTA class. After the acquision of Pr. 636 submarines, they incorporated a lot of Soviet submarine technology, producing the 039A/B. They run on licence-built German MTU diesels.

you are simplifying a lot of things here.

and it's interesting that Bill Gertz caught onto that article. I wonder if someone within US intelligence community tipped him off on anything.

Of course. I am not writing a Ph.D. thesis here.

The mening of the reference to a Mr. Bill Gertz escapes, as I am not aware of who he is.
