Seems like a new 039B submarine is about to launch. It's possible that this is the upgraded one with the sloped tower. Rumors from CJDBY claim that there are about 10 boats in total right now, with 2-3 under construction and at least four more on order, and that the next generation SSK would be shown soon.

so, the way to tell the new from old yuan class sub is the curve at the bottom forward part of the sail? new one has it curved, while old ones have a rather straight line of the sail just joining the hull at more or less 90 deg angle?

I don't think we can call this Yuan or 039B anymore. The sail looks to be completely different than the previous ones. It reminds me more of the Type 032 sail to be honest. The hump looks different too and so does the bow from what I can see.

UPDATE: some "big shrimps" are now claiming that this is the Type 039C, which might be (salty) equipped with a magnetohydrodynamic drive to achieve silent propulsion.

It looks like a standard yuan with some extra blending between the sail and the hull join.

We don't have any pictures of the rest of the hull to discern the bump I think.


MHD sounds ridiculous. Even with the sheer lack of previous substantive rumours to support such a drastic emergence, an MHD would make a submarine immensely vulnerable to MADs.

There are rumours that 039B is ceasing production and a new type of conventional sub is being built.
