Thirteen Yuans to date. I wonder how many they will end up building?

20 planned according several reports.

I think 338 and 339 are also at 22nd flotilla

Possible but then some Song have gone elsewhere ? or this unit get 14 sub's really seems impossible...

I am wondering how's the datalink among the Yuan subs and surface combatant ships? Would they all integrated in their data sharing and functioning as a cohesive combat unit? If they are, then they are decisive at advantage versus Vietnamese subs.

Like the earlier Kilos gotten from Russia , mostly individual sub is acting solo in combat situation and there ins't much communication between subs and surface fleet.

Subs can surface upload or download the latest on enemy subs and ships info.

Before that Chinese KILOS are just acting solo out there very much like the vietnamese subs right now.

Before that Chinese KILOS are just acting solo out there very much like the vietnamese subs right now.

Basically subs cannot communicate with the surface because high frequency radio waves cannot penetrate deep underwater. Even the USN utilizes a very low frequency(ELF~SLF) sending a message of only 15 letters or less.
Basically it's a head's up call informing them to raise a communication buoy at a certain time.
Many nations are doing research on quantum communication but the most advanced research have been able to reach 10 m and was only able to transmit 3~5 bits.
As for light it can only penetrate about 30 meters at most. You can easily test this if you do scuba diving in which it becomes pitch dark if you dive beyond 30 meters.

I think there's some research into using active sonar as a means of communications, though that has some very obvious drawbacks.

What constitute Yuan class subs? Are upgraded Shangs (039B) considered Yuans or only new build 041?

i would say most likely visiting, but it's also possible that Yuan gets put in 2nd flotilla going forward and 12th flotilla get the Songs.
