Of course they are legal, how do you think at the start of Iraq war, parents were buying kevlar vest for their sons in Iraq and mailing it to them. Because someone said "you go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time"

I dont know where abouts you live, but over in NZ Criminologists have determined that carrying a knife is a weapon of choice for self defence by many people. Quite often when fights break out amongst certain groups, invariably a stabbing fatality occurs.

I think it's more accurate to say, in countries with strict gun control, knife is a weapon of choice for people or groups of people involved in crimes either to prevent themselves from being killed or to kill people. Why would someone carry a knife in public to protect himself if he's not involved in something criminal in the first place? Not to mention carrying any kind of weapon in public is a punishable crime in most countries.

What category would be that Opinel knife in your opinion? A lot of people carry it and I never wasted a thought an using it in a sudden knife fight nor of ever being in such an event.OpinelKnife_open.jpg

Studies have shown that indeed in countries with strict gun control laws, violent crimes are carried out by "melee" means including knives and the such, the difference, though, is that in such countries, the mugging+murder rate is much lower than in countries like the U.S.

But yeah, mass shootings seem to be the in thing this summer...

Back to the incident near the Empire State Building:
I understand that Mr Johnson shot once and killed his former boss. When police came to arrest him they say he pulled his gun on which they fired 16 bullets roughly in his direction. They killed him and hurt nine passers-by. ( It was said earlier that another person was killed. Was that true ? )
It appears that New York police are supposed to carry guns but that it is not necessary, or too expensive, to train them in the use of those guns.

Gone are the days when Americans were celebrated marksmen. What the heck did the police do? Have they no training?

Unfortunately many police forces in the US have curtialed weapons traing except fot SWAT teams and other speical forces due to budget constraints.

All police in the US are armed.
