The Thai and Cambodian soldiers at that temple complex seem to be fraternizing and getting along quite well. That's good because it reduces tensions and reduces the likelihood of some trigger-happy sentry starting a war. However if I were commander of one of the units out there, I would order my men to stop interacting with the soldiers on the other side immediately.

Remarks on equipment visible in the pictures: The Cambodians seem to have pretty old AKs and RPGs, and many of them are wearing sandals. They are definately outclassed in terms of weaponry by the Thais. The Thai's black uniforms are ridiculous though, they stand out and must be maddeningly hot in the tropical jungle.

I've been thinking of posting such comments, but I was afraid that it would end up with country blasting. Since you guys started it, I'll add a few comments of mine. I wonder if there is any Thai in our forum?

BD, do you remember I told you my parents were in the jungle during the Vietnam war? Yes, you guys are right, the Cambodian soldiers are very poor, they have nothing as their private property. Because they guard at the Cambodian-Thai border that they have good relationship with Thai counterpart, when there is no conflict, sometime the Thai provide them with foods, clothes and even vehicle. But if there is a fighting, the only thing I worry the most is the loyalty of the Cambodian soldiers, because the Thai were so good to them.

This will be a true guerrilla war, Preah Vihea is in a high land where there are full of jungle sickness and land mine, to the Cambodian soldiers (former Khmer Rouge), it's their home. But the Thai are different, local news confirmed that one Thai soldier died of sickness. In guerrilla war, you can only use rifles, heavy weapons are less effective unless vast invasion occurs, but that would mean a regional conflict and cause the concerns of other countries.

The Thai soldiers look very cool. But looking cool doesn't mean fighting is also cool. Look at pictures above you'll find that there are two types of Cambodian soldiers, those look very poor and the others with clean uniform and helmets. Those with helmets aren't soldiers, they are military police (notice their arm labels :) in Khmer letters). The poor will fight, not these fat MP (we call them PM (French)), their belly are full beer and fat meat. After the stand-off, there have been donations from Phnom Penh to the border. Within the donation there are also boot, the soldier refuse to accept them because they simply don't like to wear boot, they said it make their feet painful. I know you guys can't walk without boot, but these soldiers just walk with their bare feet. They wear shoes made of tires which we called revolution shoes. OK, I talk too much, but to conclude, if there is a fight, who die is still unknown!

Yes I do..That was three years ago..I think..

It is good to see that the Thai soldiers have compassion for the Cambodians. This little flare up is nothing more than a very little sabre rattling. I hope there is no fighting.

To answer your comment I'm afraid to get things into political discussion. So, just make it short and avoid any possible yellow card to myself.

There will be no fight, just like you said it's some type of saber-rattling. Yesterday, Phnom Penh was just like an abandoned city because it was the general election day. I wanted to take my camera out for some photo taking, but I thought that you'll have the pix posted today so I gave up my idea.

Today, there is a minister class meeting held in Siem Riep between the Cambodian and Thai counter part. The Thai refused any multi-parties talk and Hun Sen agreed that. Cambodia is weak both politics and military, without outside intervention it will surely lose.
