Indian police officers found at least nine bombs in the city of Surat, three days after synchronized blasts killed 49 people in Gujarat state's main city of Ahmedabad. All of the bombs were defused, including one here planted near Varacha overbridge in Surat, in Gujarat state.

The Maltese Navy helped a man attempting to emigrate to Europe after they were alerted by a tugboat that a boat with immigrants was 50 miles off the coast of Malta in the Mediterranean. A pregnant illegal immigrant died in the morning soon after being rescued by a merchant ship, a Maltese armed forces spokesman said. The Navy rescued about 30 Nigerians and Somalis who tried to make the crossing.
