Here's a more balanced view of Beijing's actions in the South China Sea, by an American professor.

So, America's new best buddy in SE Asia just arrested a human rights lawyer. Any chance we'll see some State Department official stand in front of the Vietnamese courthouse denouncing the Hanoi government? What was that you say? Snowball's chance in hell...?

Don't be so sure about that. Consider how long US has stuck with Saudi Arabia and turned a blind eye to its human rights violations. There are scores more examples. It's called geopolitical expedience where "universal values" take back seats to national interests. Let's be clear US isn't alone in it, nor is it the worst offender, because when forced to make choices, nations generally treasure interests over values.

True, but than why use the term "human rights" and "democracy" as your PR adjectives when you clearly doesn't represent that value consistently?

I wonder how this painting makes the municipal authority so nervous that they order the erase of it immediately.
