What are these ships?

No sloped sides = civilian. Or at least non-combat military. But yeah, I agree. My first thought was "cruise ship".

I'd agree with that.

Judging from the Chinese characters written on top of the crane scaffold (Guanzhou International Ship Building company) I think the ship is probably not military. I am curious how you and Popeye were able to tell civilian and military ships apart though, despite the fact that the ship in question is far from complete. What are some of the distinctive features that I should look for?

Look at all those portholes/windows. You'd never see a military vessel with that many portholes. And a lot of the structure is above the main deck. See the bow? That's the main deck it goes all the way to the stern of the ship. Now look at all that superstructure above that main deck. That's nothing but a target on a military vessel..

Here's supposedly a rear shot. If so it has two helicopter hangars and a landing deck. Rumors it could be a new hospital ship. Looks similar but slightly different from the 866. I think I read some article somewhere there might be a bigger one planned with removable modules. Supposedly they tested it on a container ship.

PLAN's Life Style 88

“Assertive” has officially overtaken the word “harmony” as the most abused word in the China punditry circles. However, in light recent incidents, the PLAN has been less assertive in establishing an overseas naval base (Japan, on the other hand, has one in Djibouti).

To address crew fatigue from the long term Gulf of Aden deployment (and around Okinawa), the PLAN has launched the “Life Style 88” crew support ship. In addition to medical facilities, this luxury ocean liner will likely include the latest in Swiss Spa treatments for tired sailors. As is known, one cannot be successful in naval combat with dry facial skin!
