They look kind of like 052C but really are not?

Pointless...

Why was it pointless? I believe the chinese must have a good reason for sending those ships. No one sane country would just sent useless thing to another nation without valid reasons (whatever those reasons are.)

Could you support your claim?

Looks like a Houxin (Type 037-IG) class Corvette from the South China Sea fleet.

If the Vietnamese side is sending 500 ton class Corvettes and the Chinese side sent 6,000 ton class Destroyers for a friendship exercise, that would be silly.

Although it is a friendship exercise, it is always good to flex abit of muscles. To show off a bit of firepower... And let the world know that you are not someone to be pushed around.

(Btw, what is the biggest ship that Vietnam has?)
