A collision with a man made object by a Sea Wolf would suggest either extraordinarily bad luck or significant ASW capability no? I imagine a conventional powered UUAV would have a hell of a time setting up a collision with a SSN, without being discovered too.

Quite a significant hit apparently, very close to catastrophic. In quite a sensitive part of the world.

The rumour mill is already blaming Chinese autonomous subs,

How big should the autonomous sub be to cause this kind of damage?

Pay attention Australia, you might want to install extra seat belt on yours.
FYI The Conn is a Seawolf Australia is looking at a Virginia class or Astute class.

It’s not the first time subs have possibly collided. Objects this big don’t turn on a dime and both sides are driving blind and trying not to be heard which is the only way they can see each other (assuming a sub collision). As such bumps and collisions are going to happen eventually. Don’t assume it was intended or caused by ineptitude. I doubt we will learn what happened from either side. The “Silent” in Silent service has more than one meaning.

Personal favorite story was when the Russian K314 played chicken with the USS Kittyhawk. The Aircraft carrier won. It rolled the K314 and nearly sank it fortunately no loss of life. Kittyhawk had a scar but was fully operational took a chink of the Subs prop and shards of hull. The K had to be towed home for significant repairs. (If you are wondering the US offered aid but the Russian refused. An escort ship though kept watch in case things turned bad)
Now think about that.
This was a Russian Nuclear Victor I class boat and it got Run down by a Surface ship. It was the deer on the headlights of a SUPER CARRIER! Hard to imagine a larger object in the ocean to hit besides perhaps Australia. This event is known simply because the event involved a major surface combatant and a Russian Submarine being very nearly sunk.

Interesting. If it hit something belonging to PLAN we should have some rumor coming out of PLA. So far none, but it's still early.
