...

in the mean time, the quad packed ESSMs are considered capable in that arena.
so the AA defenses wouldn't be layered anymore?

Fact is those 57mm bofors were not going to be what I consider to be strong CIWS anyhow.
yeah I've heard Bofors 57mm has stability issues (but I'm not in the mood to go against USN LCSs again :) EDIT recently Senate Armed Services Committee went, both Sen. Reed (Dem from Rhode Island) and of course ...

Ohio-class-submarine-launches-Trident-II-D5-missiles-1024x674.jpg

Naval Today said:
A U.S. Navy Ohio class ballistic missile submarine from Submarine Group 10, which has not been named, launched three Trident II D5 missiles completing a Follow-on Commander’s Evaluation Test (FCET).

This test (FCET) is undertaken to obtain, under operationally representative conditions, valid reliability, accuracy, and performance of the missile system for use by Commander, Strategic Command and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The last one was designated FCET-52 and spanned a three-day period. The operation marked the 158th, 159th, and 160th successful test flights of the Trident II D5 missile.

The U.S. Navy said the safety of the public was of highest importance throughout the mission. Missiles were therefore unarmed and all launches were conducted from the sea and landed in the sea.

The Trident II D5 is the latest generation of the U.S. Navy’s submarine-launched fleet ballistic missiles, following the highly successful Polaris, Poseidon, and Trident I C4 programs, as Lockheed Martin, the American defence company that produces the missiles, explains.

First deployed in 1990, the Trident II D5 missile is currently aboard Ohio-class and British Vanguard-class submarines.

Simply awesome.

...and note, these are the 158th, 159th, and 160th test launches of a missile we know a lot about, and have a HUGE and long record with.

Just goes to show, even then, how critical live fire testing of these systems is.

For those who think a system like the DF-21D could be seriously deployed and relied upon to defend a nation without such testing...well, having been involved in the design of larger naval systems, and missiles systems like THAAD, it is just a ludicrous.notion.

The Chinese have a DF-21D program. And they certainly have some missiles deployed. But they have never carried out such a full-up, live test against targets at sea.

Such testing is absolutely critical, as the US shows itself with continued testing of even very mature systems.

If you want to depend on them...and rely upon them to do the job...you test them in as close to the actual environment as you can devise.

BTW, this particular night time launch picture is simply awesome.

Well, new F-15E strike Ealges that take advantage of the semi-stealth capabilities, and the new Advanced Super Hornets will be EXCLEENT and very powerful choices for these smaller Arabic players.

...and they will keep those manufacturing lines open too!

For US " legacy fighters " production, right now :

Super Hornets/EA-18G :
- USN Super Hornets
563 ordered, all or almost delivered, 12/2015 about 550 deliv 10 lost, 540 in service
New orders
FY 2016 : 5 funded
FY 2017 USN request 2 + 12 after as unfunded
2018 or after ? but definitely a maximum of about 30/40 new for all FY.

- EA-18G :
USN 150 in order, 116 deliv 09/2015, now about 125/130 remains max 20 to del.
RAAF 12 to del. begin in 2017

Boeing build 2 by month ( before 3 ) Super Hornets or Growler and have again to build about up to 2019

F-15
New F-15 only SA : 84 new replace F-15C/D ( in more 68 S upgraded replace F-15C/S )
Late some problems soon fixed but about yet 30 build deivl in 2017 maybe more.
And with it production finished for 2019 about.

F-16
LM have or almost finish deliv. to Oman, 12 remains about 18 Iraqi.
Build 1 by month in 1985 about up to 150 by year !
Reamins interesting keep this fighter want about 30% less than a F-16 and more affordable in more remains capable especialy with an AESA radar for countries less rich.
