Re: Type 95 assault rifle

My googlefu may be down, but would anyone happen to know how much the QBZ-95's 30 round box magazines weighs, loaded? On a related note I was curious if anyone happen to know how much powder the 5.8x42mm case could hold (I was trying to do some recoil estimations but couldn't find the numbers for that part).

I hope this help answer your question. It doesn't give you a straight answer, but one could do the math.

In the late 1980s Chinese designers developed a 5.8 x 42 cartridge, apparently designated DBP87, which is claimed to be superior to both the 5.56 mm NATO and the 5.54 mm Soviet. This cartridge develops a muzzle velocity of 930 metres per second from a standard barrel, with a bullet weighing 4.26 gram.

I was able to find that information independently, but I doubt I'd be able to deduce the powder weight from that given that I don't know what powder the PLA uses not to mention how many joules such powder releases.

I have a suspicion that the QBZ 95 is an incompetent rifle. However, I'm not familiar with firearms nor have I ever fire the QBZ so my judgments are based on what I've read online.

Anyone who has handled good rifles such as the M4A1, M16, AK74, etc. and the QBZ 95 please tell me what is good about the QBZ?

Also I heard that the PLA is replacing the QBZ 95 for QBZ 03. Any confirmation?

My other experience would be M16S1 (M16A1 that's made in Singapore, as well as the "Vietnam model" during my army days); AUG and AK47 are airsofts (I pick those that weight as close as to the real deal though) so they don't count I guess. So take my observation as it may...

Haven't test-fire a QBZ95 but handled a QBZ95 and then, the improved model QBZ95-1. The balance of the QBZ95 is decent, though in terms of ergonomics not so much, but in that department it has been vastly improved in the 95-1, primary the location of the selector switch now relocated to just above the pistol grip, like on the M16 series. Magazine ejection can't beat the simplicity that's on M16 or AK (the "bump method") but that's what you get for a bullpup design.

Now, apparently the Chinese is fielding QBZ03 to border guard and airborne units, whereas everyone else getting QBZ95 series, and with the introduction of the 95-1 and first fielded by the Hong Kong Garrison, guess that's myth busted for you, then.

Here are some videos one of a T-97 fired by a Canadian.

This second one is a PLA soldier using a T-95 in a firing on the move and transition demonstration.

Re: Type 95 assault rifle

Well I myself have shot dozens of military rifles and smg's in several calibers, both vintage and new models (M-16, Sig 551, AK47, SVD, VZ-58, FAL, G3, ...) but apart from a lone sks-clone no chinese (due to lack of availability).

And you may rest assured, china would not have adopted this rifle if it really sucks! But then each weapon is a compromise; a balance between reliability, ergonomics, accuracy, caliber and ... affordability.
However, to arm a Billion strong nation for dozens of different operating scenarios with a single gun is wishfull thinking.
What is it you dislike about the QBZ 95 gun?

The QBZ95 in it's first and now most commonly seen variation was something of a rushed Job. The PLA and PRC head honchos Wanted too put on a show For the Hand over of Hong Kong. After all it was a Major Propaganda Coup both internally and externally. They wanted too show the top of there game stuff so they pushed Production early before a lot of issues were resolved. issues incuding placing the Selector switch on the but stock.... Unless the PLA was going too have unit commanders select the rate of fire before mission, I can think of not intentional reason too put the weapons selector switch there.
Fortunately for the PLA, China is not in a Hot war where Such issues could cost human lives. Now however having fielded the weapon much like the M16 and L85 The PLA is playing Catch up. although I wonder there reason for changing the trigger guard.
