Many police departments in the US also use the G36 instead of M4 or M16.

I don't know why police favor the G36 over other guns.

Police sometimes are not subject to the same embargo as military. Second, could be just an airsoft for training.

It doesn't matter because the G36C is still a military rifle. It could be training, but it wouldn't make sense to have something so foreign like the G36C when indigenous rifles are available.

That's a very interesting point, but I never thought the Chinese Special Forces (SF) police could have so much leeway in equipment acquisition as the American police. If the story's true, it's surprising they could choose a foreign rifle over something indigenous. Also, could the G36C used by the Chinese SF police be chambered for the 5.8mm? I doubt it would be the 5.56mm.

No, because that would require re-chambering and retesting the gun, which would cost the same as a brand new rifle anyways...

The standard G-36 assault rifle comes in a 7.62x51mm cartridge or .308 NATO. It is not an option for it to be chambered in any other caliber as far as I know. And to re-iterate what Pointblank said it would take extensive testing and manufacturing capability to re-chamber the weapon to any other caliber, whether it were 5.8mm or 5.56mm. The Chinese would be better off just sticking with what they know. I.E. going with an indeginous rifle design.

And as far as American Police Departments choosing the G-36 over the M-4 or M-16 design I highly doubt that. Simply because of the higher power cartridge that the G-36 shoots, you see American PD's are really concerned with collateral damage, and the .308 NATO cartridge that the G-36 shoots will not only go through the person your shooting at, but will also go through the wall he is standing in front of and possibly still go through a couple of neighbor's houses down the road.

And as far as ammo goes, the 5.56 NATO is alot more available and alot cheaper, and you don't have to worry as much about collateral damage. Generally speaking, for the U.S. Police Departments the .308 NATO cartridge is reserved solely for the sniper's role, and even then they are using frangible rounds aswell as with the 5.56 NATO. That is how concerned they are with collateral damage.

Sure it wasn't a mistake on the site for calling Asians or pale hands and masked heads as Chinese?
Probably SOF training with foreign weapons... Not that much countries/militant groups use them though, at least in China's vicinity........

MrClean, you are thinking about the G-3. G-36 is chambered for 223s, no doubt.

Ya know what, you're right... my mistake.

But still most U.S. police departments would choose an AR-15/M-16 derivative over a foriegn design anyday.

Sorry for going a little off topic.

The AR-18 was supposed to have greater reliability for similar performance compared to the AR-15 and should have replaced it, yet was never fully developed. However, the base concept can be seen in the G-36 itself.

The G-36 I was talking about:

It wouldn't make sense for the Chinese Special Forces Police to adapt a weapon with 5.56mm ammunition. Unless the the site mistook the people for Chinese, like sumdud mentioned, I would assume the Chinese SF police have adapted the G36C for the 5.8mm ammunition even though that's hard to accept.
