Type 022 Missile Boat

Looks like 022 has found a new lease of life after the "kamikazi attack against CBG" use case has become obsolete. Its high speed, shallow draft, short range and stealth makes it uniquely suited for operating from forward bases in the SCS. Right now we're only seeing 2-3 of them deployed, imagine if a large proportion of the 80 total gets deployed.

One wonders if the stealth makes it more expensive than necessary in its new role, compared to say a similar boat without the stealth treatment.

Well, the boats are already paid for, so PLAN might as well get the most use out of them. And 80 should be enough to patrol the SCS forward bases, right?

Really? What will happen to 115 missile boats in operation?

Is China planning to upgrade this class of boats?

For example, increased sensors, radars, better networking with other ship and air assets, better automation/AI and increased armaments such as missiles, small drones, ASW and other capabilities.

There is huge room for these kinds of small boats to network them together and dramatically increase their capabilities

I thought it's something like 83 Type 22 ever produced?
There are more missile boats that are not 022s.

According to wiki there are 83 Type 022s, 20 Type 037IGs, 6 Type 037IIs in service. Which makes the total 109.
