As part of our work to protect the health of the public conversation, we proactively challenge 8-10 million accounts per week for engaging in various forms of platform manipulation, including spam and other inauthentic behaviors.

...

However, some of these were involved in commentary about China. These accounts were not mass reported by the Chinese authorities — this was a routine action on our part.

I wonder the distribution of CIA, HK, Taiwan and FLG accounts

Findings are based on an analysis of 1.5 million comments on official political information posts on Weibo and 1.1 million posts using hashtags associated with China and Chinese politics on Twitter. In line with previous research, little evidence of automation was found on Weibo. In contrast, a large amount of automation was found on Twitter. However, contrary to expectations and previous news reports, no evidence was found of pro-Chinese-state automation on Twitter. Automation on Twitter was associated with anti-Chinese-state perspectives and published in simplified Mandarin, presumably aimed at diasporic Chinese and mainland users who ‘jump the wall’ to access blocked platforms. These users come to Twitter seeking more diverse information and an online public sphere but instead they find an information environment in which a small number of anti-Chinese-state voices are attempting to use automation to dominate discourse. Our understanding of public conversation on Twitter in Mandarin is extremely limited and, thus, this paper advances the understanding of political communication on social media.

I'm surprised the CCP sucks so much at social media manipulation.

If mainland Chinese used automation it would've been outed very quickly by media. Not using it is the smart thing to do.

It’s getting out of control tho, you see a bunch of new reddit accounts that iust posts the same anti-China reddit front page material over and over for karma.

It pays to take the high road at the same time as opening up, pushing for the truth to come out, and it doesn't hurt to let (or even sometimes help) liars trip over their own lies. Coverage of the 2009 Xinjiang riots were a good precedent.

Also Chinese are accused of 50-cent trolls and bots regardless of the reality. Just like the accusations of the $500 billion/year IP theft, you might as well just do if it they believe you're doing it anyways.

I don't think that's the mature approach to dealing with accusations.

Twitter (

) wrote on its public policy feed Saturday that the suspended accounts were swept up in a weekly effort to crack down on "spam and other inauthentic behaviors."

LOL!

Twitter is now forced to tolerate spam bots on their social media network as long as they post anti-China messages.

Social Media is just pathetic.
