Important Brief Information about the KUZGUN Family
October 21, 2021

  • With the KUZGUN Guided Modular Munitions Family, it is aimed to develop a modular, cost-effective, Modular and Joint (that can be fired from land, surface and airborne) ammunition family, with a modular design, in terms of range and warhead options, which can be used by both SİHAs and combat aircraft.
  • There is an improved version of TÜBİTAK SAGE's Semi-Active Laser Seeker Head named CAMGÖZ on the KUZGUN. However, the head can be changed according to the type of operation to be performed.
  • The first member of the KUZGUN Family to be test fired will be the KUZGUN-SS, that is, the Free Fall variant, which will be shot from an UAV platform this year.
  • The CAMGÖZ Laser Seeker Family also includes a Dual-Mode model with a diameter of 178mm, code-named CG-178, with both Semi-Active Laser and IIR modes. As soon as the Dual-Mode head is confirmed, it will be available in 180mm KUZGUN variants.
  • TÜBİTAK SAGE is still working on the Millimeter Wave (MMW) Radar Seeker for the KUZGUN-KY variant. The MMW seeker is critical for marine systems and surface missions.
  • TÜBİTAK SAGE is currently working on a dual-mode seeker header, as well as a single header where only MMW is used as needed. In case of need, dual-mode head and MMW can be combined.
  • Currently, turbojet engine tests are continuing for KUZGUN-TJ. When it is finished, the firing tests of the KUZGUN-TJ will begin after the KUZGUN-SS variant.
  • There is an integrated RF data link in the new generation 100kg class RAVEN Guided Modular Munitions Family. The data link is bidirectional (two way) and encrypted. In this way, when the IIR seeker head is attached, it transfers the image over the data link and gains man-in-the-loop capability.
  • The KUZGUN-SS variant has a range target of at least 40km with an altitude of 20,000ft and a speed of Mach 0.2, while the KUZGUN-TJ has a range target of 150km in the same flight envelope. The first tests will be carried out as range tests. It is aimed to reach 250km, with an altitude of about 40,000 ft and a speed of 0.9 Mach, in case of being thrown from the combat aircraft, because the KUZGUN-TJ has a serious glide capability of close to 100km. It is calculated that 250km can be reached when motorized.
  • When firing from a UAV KUZGUN-TJ will start the engine, bring it to 'idle' and then dropped. In combat aircraft, it will be started after the KUZGUN-TJ is dropped.
  • There is a range target of up to 40km for the land-launched version of KUZGUN-KY, which will have a solid fuel engine. KUZGUN-KY can also be used in Marine helicopters such as SH-70. 8 units can be carried by the sea helicopter.
  • KUZGUN-KY, which is planned to be fired in 2022, can also be used in gunboats between 25m and 65m in service with the Naval Forces. In this way, it will be possible to gain an important capability for coastal targets and close land targets for gunboats. For KUZGUN-KY, a concept that can be used in fire and forget mode on SİDA (Armed Unmanned Marine Vehicle) is also proposed.
  • KUZGUN-KY will be able to reach an average speed of approximately 1.5 Mach. Rocket engine design is limited for limitations on datalink and navigation/GPS. To achieve range, the engine will burn slowly and not exceed the Mach 1.5 limit for most of the flight.

Another great article by Oryx about the creation of a future generation of drone developers in Turkey:

"Had the Bayraktar brothers and their father Özdemir listened to the advice given by the bureaucrat at the Presidency of Defense Industries, there would be no MİUS project in the works, or a Bayraktar Akıncı in the air. Initiating development at a time when the slow poison of defeatism had firmly nestled itself in Turkey's defence infustry, their struggles have paved the way for new generations to one day take over their work. The fact that new generations are now given a chance to advance their skills and interests through prize money, sponsorships and chances to enroll in universities is likely to pay off immensely in the future."

''Our work will continue incessantly with every fiber of our being until our country reaches the goal of being a fully independent leader of UAV technology.'' (By Özdemir Bayraktar 1949 - ∞)

Angola, Togo and Nigeria want Turkish drones and specifically the Akinci:

Follow up on this:

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan paid a visit to the Baykar Defense facilities in Istanbul. Expressing his condolences for the death of Özdemir Bayraktar, Erdoğan also made a short speech. President Erdoğan, who recently went on a tour of Africa, announced that all of the countries he visited had requested unmanned aerial vehicles from Turkey.

In the statement made by Erdoğan, “We flew AKINCI together with you. Who knows, I hope we will fly many more AKINCI's. I hope that we will fly the 'rainbow' together. We do not have much time. We have to fly them together. Because I am saying this clearly. Every place I went, even in Africa, asked us for UAV, UCAV and AKINCI. You have to know that the world, you know, these forces exist. These forces are following you. What did they (Baykar) do in the UAV, what did they do in the UCAV, what did they do in AKINCI? Because right now, I'm not saying you are in the top 5, you are in the top 3."

P.S. Rainbow might be the name for the TB3 or MIUS.

Turkey and South-Korea sign DOI to supply powerpack for the Altay MBT:

A little reminder:
No purchase decision has been made yet.
A sufficient number of power units (engine + transmission) to be tested is expected to arrive in Turkey in 2022.
Subsequently, it is aimed to complete the testing process within a maximum of 8-12 months.
If the results of the tests are found positive, if it is understood in other conditions, sufficient number of tanks will be purchased until the BATU power group is ready.
In the meantime, minor changes will be required for compatibility in Altay tanks to be produced with the South Korean power group.

I seems 'rainbow' is the name for the MIUS:

Erdogan said, "We flew Akıncı together with you, who knows, I hope we will fly many more Akıncı, I hope we will fly the Rainbow together, we don't have much time, we have to fly them together." With his statements, he announced the name of MIUS, which is Baykar Defense's next step after AKINCI UCAV. MIUS is planned to make its first flight in 2023.
