Yes, it is planned to be equipped with AESA radar and air-to-air missiles. We should see them tested this year if everything goes right. The MIUS (2023) and the supersonic (wingman) UCAV (2025) will also feature radar+air-to-air capability.

This might be a good option for intercepting other drones. Saudi has been blowing millions of dollars down Houthi drones with F-15s/Eurofighters and MRAAMs when cheaper missiles/platforms could've sufficed.

Minister of defence announced ramjet air-to-air missile under development by Tubitak-Sage, named Gokhan.


"Within the scope of the protocol signed between the Ministry of National Defense and ASFAT, the delivery ceremony of 1000 HGK-82 precision guidance kits, with the technical support of TÜBİTAK SAGE, under the main contractor of ASFAT, with the Minister of National Defense Akar, Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank, Chief of General Staff Yaşar Güler. It was held at the 3rd Air Maintenance Factory Directorate with the participation of the Force Commanders.

In the program, it was announced that the name of the RamJet Engine Air Missile developed by TÜBİTAK SAGE is 'GÖKHAN'."

A contract was signed with ASELSAN for the new Radar System Project

A Mobile Tower and Mobile Low Altitude Air Traffic Radar System Project contract was signed between ASELSAN and the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB).

In the notification made by ASELSAN to the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP) on June 23, 2021, it was announced that a contract with a value of 52.000.000 USD and 115.000.000 TL was signed. The contract in question was signed between SSB and ASELSAN, and deliveries are planned between 2026 and 2027.

First batch of the 1000 HGK-82 contract delivered. The rest will be delivered by August 2022. Turkey now has 3 different production lines (Aselsan, ASFAT, Kale) for various guided bombs for 3000 pieces annual production rate.

Turkey aims for 75-80% military indigenization rate by 2023:

"With the leadership, support and incentives of our President, our local and nationality rate in our high-tech defense industry has now exceeded 70 percent. Our goal is to increase this rate to 75-80% in 2023. We will continue to do what is necessary for this.”

Fair enough, but I don't quite see the point then, with Akinci already occupying that niche. If you wanted more endurance and/or payload, it'd probably be more straightforward to modify the latter, think Reaper -> CPB (more span, MTOW increase, keep the engines). You'd also risk losing parts commonality with Anka (AFAIK, the forward fuselage is unified between both).

Generally speaking, Baykar and TAI product ranges are nicely complementary without much overlap (strongly indicating that the efforts were coordinated by the customer, as pointed out earlier).

The Akinci is a good armed drone. The Aksungur is a good surveillance drone. IMHO Turkey definitely needs a larger surveillance vehicle. They do not need a larger armed drone. So the question is, would the Akinci make a better surveillance platform or the Aksungur.

I am of the view that the twin boom design of the Aksungur is more promising and might be more easily enlarged than the Akinci. Already the Aksungur has a 4 meter larger wingspan in an airframe that is 25% lighter (at MTOW) than the Akinci and with only half as powerful engines. It achieves greater range and endurance of 49 hours compared to the 24 hour endurance of the Akinci while being a smaller vehicle.

The central fuselage also has a clean 360 degree view. Unlike the Akinci it should be possible to mount both forward and rear looking radar on the fuselage (when enlarged), and the twin booms can mount large side looking arrays. It has a SIGINT and an MPA/ASW variant in development. An enlarged variant will be able to carry more powerful versions of the same SIGINT and ASW suites.

The Akinci's advantages lie in its higher speed and larger weapon carrying capability. But an enlarged Aksungur would probably have more internal volume available for mission suites.

The Aksungur is definitely more useful in recon role. I doubt the extra speed of Akinci makes it more survivable. Both are slow and very vulnerable if their electronic countermeasures are defeated. Akinci is an interesting project indeed. It is like the Reaper but it also has a lot of extra features like AESA radar, air-to-air engagement and cruise missile launching capability. I think the real purpose of Akinci is conserving the lifespan of the F-16s in the plethora of low-intensity warfare Turkey currently participates in.
Also, I think the diversity of drones in the Turkish arsenal is very impressive. Turkey currently fields 2 different indigenous kamikaze drones (Kargu, Alpagu), 3 mini recon UAVs (Bayraktar Mini, Gözcü, Togan), 2 MALE (TB-2, Anka), 2 HALE (Aksungur, Akinci). There are others in development too such as Saka (Micro UAV), Kargı (Large Kamikaze), MIUS and Göksungur (Jet powered), Songar (Mini UAV with a machine gun) and TB-3. There are also a few more I didn't list because of their current lack of prospects. Turkey simply blows away everyone except the USA and China in the diversity of military UAVs
