They’re supposed to reach a major milestone next year, so why not just wait and see what happens (instead of going "oh, I knew this would happen...")? @Deino you certainly aren't as informed about this as you are about Chinese developments, I wouldn't take a definitive stance if I were you.
If we take China as a reference, WS-10 started around 1987? targetting for J-10 and flankers. It got introduced in J-11 in 2008 but having lots of problems. That is already 20 years and not mature. In 2012 WS-10A solved most problems and can be called finished. That is 24 years to meet design specification. Mounting on J-10C happened in 2021, 34 years after program start for its original target aircraft.

So regardless how one sees China's speed compared to USA and USSR/Russia, China isn't much faster for her 1st fully indigenous large turbofan in the class. It took 24 to 34 years to be ready depending on how the target aircraft evlove its demand which is also a moving target.
