That is why I think Trump is smart. Although not exactly a genius.
He views this politics as a game. In games, you win some, you lose some.

Then the Chinese commerce department made comments trying to justify these actions, which were not inflammatory, Trump immediately changes course.
This is the exact same strategy he used to win the first time for Trump 1.0 as he would say two things often contradictory, but people will only hear what they want to hear.
Here, we just stick to facts, that is the US economy is not doing that great, outside of the AI boom. More tariffs/taxes is the wrong choice.
So Trump quickly defuses this potential problem, and I believe most people will not come out and say the president is weak, that would mean some American is criticizing America as being weak, which is traitorous.
Life is funny. Trump learned a lot it seems with his partnership with Hong Kong businessmen who bailed him out decades ago. Trump kind of senses the Chinese still open to have some harmony here. I think he is right.
