#WhiteHouseNSCChinaTeamPurged# [All China-Focused Staff at White House NSC Axed? U.S. Media: Trump to "Go With His Gut" Moving Forward]
Associated Press, May 24 — Multiple sources reveal President Trump has ordered a "major overhaul" of the National Security Council (NSC), drastically downsizing its workforce. The move will force out numerous officials, with many reassigned to their original agencies.
Financial Times reports NSC Chief of Staff Keith Kellogg emailed affected personnel on the 23rd, giving them 30 minutes to clear their desks and vacate the premises. While senior director for Asia Matthew Pottinger remains, his entire team—including all China-focused staff—has been terminated.
Established during the Truman administration, the NSC advises the president on national security policy and interagency coordination. It employs ~400 personnel, including 180 support staff. Reuters cites sources stating the restructuring aims to slash headcount to "mere dozens." Among those cut: 90-95 detailees from other agencies (who may return), while some will be relocated within the government.
Trump reportedly grew disillusioned with the NSC during his first term, viewing it as obstructing his "America First" agenda. The council has been in turmoil since his re-election. This shakeup is expected to empower the State Department, Pentagon, and other agencies—though AP notes Trump will likely "rely on his instincts" for final decisions.
