To those who serve/served in the armed forces: WHAT DO YOU ENVY ABOUT THE PLA?

The food standard of PLA in field should be the same as peace time, that's a direct order from the central military comittee. They should contain enough nutrition according to standard and cooked according to standard (taste good enough and have enough variations). So cooking is a very important factor on evaluating a unit's performance. When you don't have chance to cook, there will be processed field food. Some need heating, some just need to put some water into the interlayer of the pack, then it will be hot.

I think US has similar food standard with PLA, just not so much emphasis on taste.

American troops have MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) for when they're actually out in the field; they come in foil packets and have a chemical heating mechanism built in. They're apparently pretty good; British troops have been known to try and barter for them as they prefer them to their own.

As for PLA troops, I heard they eat very well, someone mentioned it either here or on CDF, but they consider feeding the troops well very important.

The standard battle carry of hot sauce for me was at least two combat bottles of Tabasco sauce, it will make anything taste great.

Truly horrendous stuff, in fact, we were told that we don't eat those for the satisfaction of eating, but, it is our duty to eat them.

When I was serving at the HK-China border, one of our duties was to monitor PRC border guard/PLA barrack's activities -- training, exercising, vehicle/personnel movement...etc, 24 hr a day. Their quartermaster must be pretty good cook because guards seemed to enjoy the food from the look of their faces. I however cannot say the same about my own side's.

The gurkha has the best ration- curry- in the british army. The british regular's kidney pie in can is just disgusting, to me anyway.

And the US has the best MRE and foodstuff. Sometimes they come to join us for exercise and we always wanted to exchange stuff from them. I heard one time the US marine even airlifted cold coke drinks to their op in the hills while we looking on and drinking luke-warm water from our bottle on the next hill. Now that is a modern army.

What I like about PLA? Discipline. Those who served outside (e.g. UN, HK and macau) have great discipline. They never get into trouble with the locals. However, I cannot say that for the PLA in the mainland. They act like they are above the law and they probably are.

If you run into problems with the PLA in mainland, be it a simple traffic accident or business disputes, you will have a hard time getting justice.

well I bet their food is as crappy as it is in any other army..they are just told to smile in propaganda matters. Isent there some laws of physics that determens how military food - wheter its field ratio, baked in the soup-cannons or from the garrison restaurant - just cannot be good by anymeans:D

In here, even when we were on realistic combat trainings in the field, the garrisons cantine-car could just pop out near our battery fire-positions to offer cold drinks and other nesserities just like that...They propaply would do the same even in real combat, just add some armour plates or something...

The food I was served in the USN was generally pretty good. Of course other will dispute that...The only ship I was on that had bad chow was the Hancock..yuck. The Nimitz had great food. Steak, sea food..great salads and deserets every day...:)

Navies have great food, I think that apply to the whole world. My uncle talked quite something about food in PLAN to me. I also saw what JPMSD eat from the TV, sure better than normal people.
