<The Rafale is a great aircraft, but in terms of cost and operation the F-16 has its advantages. Also France should improve the service offered to the Taiwan military, considering the lack of aid from French officials to train, maintain etc the French equipment>

C' mon kliu0... Do you have evidence on this about the french?! Of course USA always provides the best to the ROCAF, just because they have strong historic ties between them in term of military defence.

First, as I know it, french engineers are often in Taiwan. One of them has been caught by taiwanese TV recently...:p

Most part of what you said cannot be verified and are just kinda allegations. Just for the training I just can inform you that many foreign pilots have been trained in France on Mirage fleet in different configurations, and that s all what I can say because these informations must remain secret and involve agreememts between the airforces of different nations... including asian ones.

Just for your information, some Rafales fighters trained with one of the best F-16 fleet in the USA recently. The french fleet took the advantage very quickly...

End of :eek:ff I m just happy that the USA consider a total upgrade of the oldest F-16 inside the ROCAF.

PARIS AIR SHOW: Taiwan air force okays IDF upgrades, awaits govt approval
By Siva Govindasamy

Taiwan's air force has decided to go ahead with an upgrade for its indigenous AIDC F-CK-1 Indigenous Defence Fighters to the "Goshawk" standard and is waiting for the government's nod to launch the programme.

Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation unveiled the first two F-CK-1C/D IDF-2 prototypes in 2007 and handed them over to the Taiwan air force for tests. The company proposed upgrades to half of the 130 A/B-model IDFs, the last of which was manufactured in 1999, but this has been put on hold as successive Taiwanese governments have not given their nod.

"The air force has conducted initial operational tests, recording in excess of 100 flights in evaluation of the IDF-2 Goshawk upgrade system. The aircraft has met or exceeded project goals," says AIDC. "Based on their operational requirement, the air force has launched a retrofit programme, the "Xiang Zhan" programme, to upgrade 71 IDFs from 2009 through 2012. While the programme is in government review, AIDC remains confident it will receive the approvals to proceed."

There is some debate within Taiwan about funding the upgrade, especially since Taipei has wanted to buy 66 Lockheed Martin F-16C/D fighters from the USA for several years.

However, both the Bush and Obama administrations have not taken any action on the request and observers believe that it is unlikely to go ahead due to the impact it would have on China, which considers Taiwan a renegade province.

AIDC believes an F-16 sale will not affect the upgrade programme, saying: "The sale of the F-16C/D is expected to complement the IDF-2 upgradeeach aircraft performs different roles in Taiwan's defence".

Apart from the IDF, Taiwan's fighter inventory includes Lockheed F-16A/Bs, Dassault Mirage 2000-5s and Northrop F-5s. Washington has sold refurbished Lockheed P-3C maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft, and the Boeing AH-64D Apache helicopters to Taipei over the last few years, and is likely to go ahead with a deal for Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk utility helicopters.

PARIS AIR SHOW: Taiwan's AIDC eyes trainers based on IDF
By Siva Govindasamy

Taiwan's Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) plans to present a proposal to develop an advanced jet trainer based on its F-CK-1 fighter to the island's air force, and aims to work with international partners on the programme.

The company hopes to get the nod to within a year to develop the aircraft, which will replace the AIDC AT-3s the air force inducted in the 1980s. The Taiwan air force hopes to begin the replacement within the next five years.

"To meet the air force pilot training requirement, AIDC launched an indigenous advanced trainer development programme in late 2006. The conceptual design phase has successfully finished, and AIDC is also looking for international co-operation to facilitate the programme," says George Shiah, president of AIDC.

"The government has started to look into this requirement and there are several options on the table. What is clear is that this will be an urgent need. We have presented our ideas to the air force and we hope to come up with a formal proposal within the next month. Whatever we come up with must meet the air force's requirements."

Shiah believes that the air force would eventually start to look for replacements for its Beechcraft T-34s, but this will take longer than the five years that mooted for the AJT.

Wow, an AT-3 replacement already! IIRC there has been rumbling about this sort of thing for a while now but I guess its an official, concrete project now.

Thanks heaps Semi-Lobster!!!

Yea, the IDF was already considered for LIFT. Now that there is concrete evidence of AIDC wanting to do it. The AT-3s are ageing, about time it was replaced I say and self-producing is the way to go!

The IDF upgrades are welcome news, while they are at it why not upgrade all?

I guess they either don't believe that the older frames could take an upgrade or that they are so old it that they would not be worth upgrading. Which begs the questions, 'If elements of the IDF fleet are already in such an advanced 'condition', then what sort of lifespan can we expect from the non-upgraded F-CK-1s?

As for the IDF trainer article, while it will certainly be interesting, the LIFT trainer market seems very 'crowded' nowadays, when the article speaks of international partners, its doubtful that any aircraft will be exported anywhere. I'm just curious if there will be any significant airframe changes made to the aircraft, given the '5year' timeline, probably not. At least AIDC will be producing new planes though!

If they're talking to the French, the Taiwanese seriously need to talk about getting Asters for the Lafayettes, as it is they have Sea Chapparalls, which are basically useless.

Sounds like a load of nonsense to me. Taiwan might look towards a new jet in the future, but I don't believe a design is ready.

Russian technology? Give me a break.
