Try lobbying the US Congressmen into passing something that'd piss off China, then there'd be the better chance with nice stuff release to Taiwan's "can-buy list", but that'd need cash, and without the media knowing it until it's over.

Like I've said before, Europe will be a tough nut to crack, either they don't want to piss off China and lose out on trade and investments, or like Gripen it has US tech on it thus subject to US monitor and intervention. So on that part, you might need to have EU get into another bad year with China as well...how about having them openly support the Tibet separatist movement? I remember at one time Taiwan gov't get rather close with that side, might able to help lobby this under the table.

You do realize Taiwan is still part of China as a whole, maybe not the People Republic of China which claims the title of China. So why would Taiwan want to loose a region that belongs to them?

But without denial that the last pro-independence administration still have a lingering effect, just look as the current KMT, what stops them from leaning in that direction too would be the political price to drop the unification facade is still too great...and to say the Dalai Lama is just a religious leader is self delusion by all levels - he's just as much as a political person. And it was during the last administration that Dalai Lama gains increased limelight in Taiwan - part of what that administration did to piss off the PRC by associating itself with whoever that are PRC's enemies , fellow separatists is just one.

And by my account, the last administration did said ROC is what Taiwan currently own physically, not the huge landmass that the "officially" claimed, and the current administration haven't correct it yet.

But anyway, the current impotent administration lacks the courage to go whichever way, only wish to remain the status quo...but reality is, since the last decade the status quo have already changing into PRC's favor, how long can they keep this up?

Now, I've said my piece and let us all get back to topic.

Seems that no F-16 C/D will come this year. Again & again. This too long story is becoming ridiculous...

Another year passing, another year where the ROC sits on its butt rather than doing anything proactive or useful towards actually finding solutions to replacing Taiwan's F-5E/F fleet

The Americans aren't going to sell the F-16 to ROC, cause of the PRC. ROC really screwed up big time by waiting so long for nothing. Time wasted, when it could've been invested for domestic military research and programs.

My personal view.

Well I wouldn't say ROC screwed up as much as a certain political party blocked the acceptance of George Bush's military package in 2001. But of course the only way they can solve this is to start an indigenous program, but politics always get in the way of any sort of progress in Taiwan.

Like I've said before, you really need to have China and US in a bad year to have things go in Taiwan's way, but right now it'd be difficult for such, unless things in South China Sea heat up to the point it drags US in militarily...or some other things in that manner.

Indeed, the KMT have a lot to answer for. Which is one reason why I think Ma is having a hard time getting the F-16s out of Washington - he and his party were happy to veto the package when it suited them and only wanted the deals to go through when it looked like they were going to get back into power.

Simple politics, really. If the table was reversed the DPP would do the same.

F-16 C/D purchase is a waste of money on the long wrong. It would be wiser for Taiwan to invest the money in surface to air defences.
