Superhornet (f/a18e/f) & Growler (ea-18g) Thread

The US & Australia have SHs. Finnland has F/A-18C (legacy) Hornets I think. I'm not aware of them procuring, or having plans to procure, Super Hornets. I think a replacement decision for those will be due in the Finnish AF in a few years time. A SH is a likely contender and potential choice. But my understanding so far is that the Gripen E is the frontrunner at this time. Well, informally, since there's no decision being made right now.

Scratch, you are exactly right.

There will be no Super Hornets for Finland. They are evaluating either the Gripen or the F-35 to replace their Hornets.

Right now, the only super Hornet customers are the US and Australia...who both also own the EA-18G Growler, which is derived from the F/A-18F.

Super Hornet Advanced cockpit pictures. No DAS but front has no HUD so I assume a similar helmet display to F-35. I also assume they would want to incorporate a similar level of data/command networking since that would be even more valuable for a non stealth platform.

I'm old enough to remember the original "Big Picture" concept pioneered by McDonnel Douglas as a feature for advanced fighters beyond the F-15. It took a lot longer to get here than I had thought. They still don't even have the fancy 3D tunnels in space and radar keep-out zones shown in those old concept paintings. At least they haven't released any public photos showing such things.

Is the middle picture (rear) a rendering from a different design? I wouldn't understand why the rear seater has a HUD while the driver doesn't.
Yet in the last pic of the sim, there's no HUD at all. Introducing all that helmet based, sensor fusing magic seems so complex, I imagine it could make the "ASH" so expensive there might be no more economical incentive to go with it over F-35 right away.

Finnish air force want's the F-35A or the F-35C.

Even Finnish-Swedish politicians who always want more cooperation with Sweden thinks that F-35 would be a good fighter. Luckily enough Finland will purchase new fighters after 2020 so most F-35 problems should been solved by then... and most of it's competitors like Rafale are already 30 year old designs by then!

As reported in the Helsinki Times , Carl Haglund said Finland should not put Nordic defence co-operation ahead of performance when choosing between the Swedish-built Gripen E and the US-built F-35, providing there is little difference in cost between the two types.

"Although I advocate co-operation with Sweden, we should not acquire Swedish [Gripen E] fighters if we could acquire American F-35 stealth fighters for roughly the same price. Performance must take precedence in the investment," he is quoted as saying.
