A new international railway route from Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality to Mandalay, southern Myanmar, has officially started operation, with the first freight train departing from Chongqing on Monday, which will arrive in Mandalay about 20 days earlier than what it takes on traditional routes.

The new route is expected to strengthen Chongqing's connectivity with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) members, said Ba Chuanjiang, an official from Chongqing.

The train loaded with 60 TEUs of machinery equipment, electronic components, auto parts, departed from the Liangjiang New Area in Chongqing on Monday, which will head to Mandalay, passing through Lincang, in Southwest China's Yunnan Province, Chinese media outlet cnr.cn reported on Tuesday.

The successful operation of the new route opens another logistics path for exports from Chongqing and neighboring regions, as products can reach Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia through the seaport of Mandalay, according to Yuxinou Logistics, a local rail logistics company operating the Yuxinou (Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe) Railway.

Chongqing will further promote the integration and development of other transportation methods from the metropolis to Myanmar, while the returning train from Myanmar to Chongqing could be loaded with products of Myanmar and other Southeast Asian countries, said Xi Dan, manager of Yuxinou Logistics.

The total route is 2,000 kilometers starting from Chongqing, passing Lincang and the Mengding-Chinshwehaw border gate to Mandalay. The delivery time is 15 days, which is 20 days shorter than the traditional route and the logistics cost can be lowered by 20 percent.

The route will shorten the transportation distance and time, while optimizing the international logistics model for transporting goods from the inland region of the western part of China to many ports in the Middle East and Europe.

The new route comes as China and ASEAN members are bolstering logistics connectivity after the launch of the China-Laos Railway, a major project under the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, in December 2021. The railway has seen significant passenger and freight transportation, underscoring the booming trade between China and ASEAN. As of earlier this month, the China-Laos Railway had handled more than 2.7 million passenger trips and 2.9 million metric tons of cargo since it opened, according to official data.

Not all Southeast Asian countries are the same so lumping them together don't mean they have the same potential. I think it was Mahathir of Malaysia that said while trying to address the ethnic Chinese dominance of the economy that the government has tried to get ethnic Malaysians to open up more businesses with government support programs but they just want handouts from the government. Yeah there's potential in Southeast Asia if they preserve their Chinese connections but it could all turn into a disaster when the West engages in anti-Chinese pogroms again to oust Chinese influence.

@Chandragupt heres what China is doing already...India might as well just tie into this line and expand to Singapore, if China haven't gotten there already.

China will continue to adopt friendly policies towards Myanmar and its people and further consolidate the four pillars of mutual political trust, beneficial cooperation, people-to-people bonds, and cultural exchanges, Wang noted.

U Wunna Maung Lwin said Myanmar cherishes the Myanmar-China "Paukphaw" friendship and will continue to support China's legitimate stances on the issues concerning the Taiwan region, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Xizang Autonomous Region and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The two sides also exchanged views and vowed to promote the LMC and China-ASEAN cooperation.

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi starts production in Vietnam to boost delivery efficiency

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has recently delivered its first batch of products made in Vietnam, in an apparent bid to boost delivery efficiency in Southeast Asian markets and reduce logistics costs, the company said on Tuesday.

Delivery costs in Southeast Asian markets have increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic and logistics costs have risen in recent years, and in order to address these problems, the company has joined up with its partners to implement production localization, a Xiaomi spokesperson told the Global Times on Tuesday.

The Xiaomi handsets produced in Vietnam will be delivered locally as well as to other Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia and Thailand, according to media reports.

Xiaomi's move also comes as China and Vietnam are seeking to further expand bilateral cooperation. During a meeting between Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son in Bagan, Myanmar on the sidelines of the seventh Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Foreign Ministers' Meeting, both sides vowed to use the upcoming 14th Meeting of the China-Vietnam Steering Committee for Bilateral Cooperation as an opportunity to comprehensively sort out and coordinate the promotion of cooperation between the two countries in various fields, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Setting up production lines in Vietnam or other Southeast Asian markets can improve both cost and delivery efficiency of Chinese handset makers, given the potential market demand and relatively low labor costs in the region, Ma Jihua, a veteran technology analyst, told the Global Times.

ASEAN has become China's largest trading partner, and increasingly tight industrial cooperation between China and ASEAN will be the long-term trend for many industries, including smartphones, Ma said.

Alongside China's industrial upgrading, some labor-intensive industries have started to relocate to Vietnam and other countries, starting with manufacturers of shoes, clothes and furniture.

Some electronic products manufacturers have also seen this trend in recent years, including China's leading household appliance producer TCL and display screen maker BOE, according to media reports. One of China's leading solar panel manufacturers, Trina Solar, also established a production line in Vietnam as early as in 2017.

Though some foreign media reports have been hyping the relocation of certain manufacturing firms out of China, it is actually a sign of "healthy" development that China's industrial chains are relocating some of their downstream production capacity to places with lower costs, including some Southeast Asian countries, Ma said, adding that this is not only in line with China's industrial upgrading, but could also help Chinese companies grow across the global market.

Relocating production from China to Vietnam and the broader Southeast Asia region is in fact a spillover effect of the expansion of Chinese industrial chains, which will lead to the integrated development of the two economies' value chains, experts noted. To some extent, it means the supply chain network centered in China has grown larger, experts added.

Meanwhile, Ma pointed out that despite Vietnam's advantages in labor resources, location and other aspects, its capacity to undertake production from China is so far limited given its dependence on China for the supply of certain core equipment and parts.

Foreign direct investment to Vietnam grew by 7.8 percent year-on-year in the first five months of 2022, the highest level in five years, local media reported, citing official data.
