Due to the ongoing discussion in three separate threads concerning this new fighter, I decided to create a thread and merged all previous posts from within the last few days into this one.

I know, this thread would easily also fit into the naval section, but since we don't know for the moment, if this newly announced type will be indeed the long awaited new naval fighter or a completely new project, it shall remain here within the PLAAF section:

Therefore, welcome on board in this new thread ... and may we soon get more information on it:

I guess the word "fighter" could also apply to UCAV.
No, not in the way how it is commonly used in Chinese language. If you ask any Chinese, layman or Aero engineer, 战斗机/fighter means manned fighter jet. A drone would ALWAYS be called "无人机" /unmanned aircraft. A attack drone is always "攻击无人机" / attack UAV.

Possibly a drone, although it's likely a fighter. If it's indeed the J-XY naval fighter, it's kind of surprising that it's at such an early stage.

It is definitely a manned fighter jet. The word in the article was "战斗机" which by Chinese convention meant manned fighter jet. UAV (armed or not) is translated to 无人机.

I won’t be that much surprised, I mean it’s only been several years since they operated the j-15, and the navel aircraft has so many differences from a land base aircraft. Like structurally, functionally and etc, maybe they want a smaller plane size close to f-18 ~ f-35 instead of j-15~j-20.

TBH, I once thought the j-xy would be designed after their catapult aircraft carrier launched...

Cross-Phase is "转阶段" in the wechat article. It means the program moving from one development stage to the next. Translation is always tricky, 转 can be translated to "cross, turn, move on, change, transit", 阶段 can be translated to "phase, stage, level, section". Which English word to take depends on the subject.

I agree with Totoro's post #393 that, it is very likely that the joint team's activity is part of FC-31 program. The "new fighter jet" when adopted by PLA will be FC-31 derived.

The wechat article does not reveal any previously unknown program, but a reward to part of ongoing program's effort.

P.S. the two teams are structural department of 601 institute and military product department of

of AVIC. MTI is the dedicated institute in the manufacturing technology within AVIC serving everyone including CAC and SAC etc. It is headquartered in Beijing.
Nice translation (much better than mine), hopefully this will clear up any potential misunderstanding that my posts may have created

F (方案/fang an, plan), C (初样/chu yang, proto sample), S (试样/shi yang, pilot sample), D (定型/ding xing, finalizing)

And where would this project be in terms of stage? A lot of folks are speculating that detailed design has been completed and that they're possibly moving onto the prototyping ("C"?) stage.

Any idea if there is a possibility of seeing a prototype fly in a year or so?
