I was thinking that the reason why the J-XDS main bays look so short/about the same size as the J-20 is that it's likely optimized for the PL-16 which is rumored to better than the PL-15 in every metric while in a smaller form factor. As like the PL-15 being designed for the J-20's weapons bay. While the J-36 is meant as the general multirole, carry any munition aircraft, the J-XDS could be just pure air superiority.
You mean the “Chengdu Kill Everything Jet”?

Looking at that photo gave me some funny ideas. What if that inexplicable groove along the bottom of the J-XDS is actually an external recessed mount for a single PL-17 missile?
I had been thinking that as well (or for a single YJ-21), but keeping it close to my chest like my views on the “reprocessed” H-20, though I think this is even less likely.

Doesn’t really make sense, firstly if there’s a recess for that missile might as well make it a internal bay, the space requirement isn’t that different; secondly carrying a single extra A2A missile doesn’t bring anything to the table. Plus, the high-res photos we got a few weeks ago shows the IWB door extend partly into the groove so hanging ordinance there doesn’t physically work regardless.

No offense, but the obsession over if and how the J-XDS could carry PL-17 is borderline paranoia in terms of “big missile gud must have biggest bestest missile”. No doubt the PL-17 is a very long range and very capable missile, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end-all be-all of air combat, nor does it mean that every single jet fighter must be able to carry it no matter what

I have a feeling it’s a direct transplant of the WS-10 2D TVC nozzles we’ve seen at Zhuhai.

I think considering how 2D TVC nozzles can only have a certain number of shapes, and considering the non-specific nature of the 2D TVC nozzles we saw at Zhuhai, I think there's just as a good a chance that the nozzles (and the powerplants they're installed on) are unrelated to the WS-10 with 2D TVC we saw at the air show.

I would bet that they experimented with a dozen 2D TVC nozzle designs that all have generally similar external appearances at this sort of distance but have important minor small scale differences.

Good idea, except that it would block all the missile bay doors.

Whether this groove is based on the needs of the central lifting body or the needs of high-speed airflow can only be known after Chinese engineers publish a paper.
In any case, compared to the "indeletable" bulges on the F35, filling these areas of the JXX is not an insurmountable obstacle for Chinese engineers.
