Shenyang FC-31 / J-31 Fighter Demonstrator

You made my point on the JF-17, because it had a partner providing both some funding for development and demand for the finished product from the PAF. Neither case is true for the J-31.
I compare J-31 (KSA interest) to the JF-17 stage before Pakistan committed to the project decades ago. JF-17 did not have either cases before that stage either. ;) JF-17 could have went nowhere like where it is today just like J-31 may go nowhere.
What I was trying to say is that KSA (if the rumor is to be trusted) is building that case for J-31 just like Pakistan was building that case for JF-17 in the past.

If Saudi Arabia signs a MOU to either co-develop or commit to buying J-31s once it's in production then I'll change my tune on the viability of the 5th Gen multi-role fighter. Until then, and with no one showing anything but some "interests," I don't believe it's a viable project.

true and valid point. Just a note, I was not trying to convince but only to point out the similarity between the two projects.

SW- given the expense of developing a Gen 5 fighter and no evidence of interest from PLAAF/PLANAF, is it likely the J-31 will ever go into production? I think chances are low the J-31 will ever go into volume production.

They've built two prototypes, and if those reports of the third prototype are true (Deino referenced a Tweet saying that a model of the third prototype would appear at the Paris Airshow), it's looking pretty substantive if it has more than two flying prototypes.

Let's say Shenyang has a third J-31 demonstrator in or near flying form, and the project is substantive from Shenyang's PoV. What of it? There doesn't seem to be any concrete interests from either the PLAx or foreign buyers. Why is that? The J-31 is billed as a capable, cost effective, multirole 5Gen aircraft. If that's so, why are the buyers so shy?

Because maybe it doesn't fit their planned force structure? Plenty of great potential weapons die because what drives acquisition is planning, not capability.

Ok, I buy the J-31 not fitting into PLAx planned force structure. What about Pakistan or KSA? They don't have any J-20 and they're scared to death of India (Pakistan) and Iran (KSA). In the case of Pakistan, it's public knowledge India has been working with Russia on the T-50, and failing that it might cozy up to Uncle Sam and buy the F-35.
