I think it's just different design philosophy. PAK-FA does not look like a design that's really aiming at achieving stealth and that seems to be how Russians design decision. J-31 looks to be China's attempt for a low end stealth design to compliment J-20 and isn't going to have the flight performance of PAK-FA or J-20.

Some talk out of Zhuhai is indeed Russia may surprise many by becoming a major buyer of J31.
I don't think it would be a big surprise. Looking at T50, Russia can surely use some help from J31 tech especially in stealth.

LOL, you guys need to go read CNN!

"The FC-31's flight routine shows that it "bleeds" too much energy -- so when it enters into a turn it begins to lose altitude. Even during straight and level flight the pilot has to engage the engine's afterburners in order to keep the aircraft from sinking to a lower altitude. These are defects in the aircraft's aerodynamic design that a Russian design team would not have made.".

So, either the airframe design is horrible, or the engines they are using right now is underpowered.
BTW, I have yet to see the video of this supposedly "bleed to much energy" aerial demonstration anywhere. The youtube video I saw it seems to perform fine. Perhaps someone can enlighten me?

No doubt!
Questions is, do they have the program? It seems that the RAF is planning to acquire the Mig-35 to fulfill its future the medium fighter role requirements. As both the J-31 and Mig-35 programs progress, it will be interesting to observe their competition in the international market.

I sense a typo somewhere in there.

J-31 is fine, the authors are quoting a Russian Engineer who is on the "sales team", he was just talking smack, while I'm sure AVIC is trying to boost the thrust of the Russian RD-93 with an indigenous engine, (hopefully WS-13 or equivalent), as I explained in an earlier post, the pilot was intentionally slowing the aircraft and kicking it into burner as part of the airshow, as I said, the J-31 flies very well, it would not have been flown at Zuhai if it had a problem of any kind? This is a very fine, very low observable aircraft, that will likely be a pair to the J-20?

You know looking at the FC-31 from that angle is the first time I think this plane could actually be a decent fighter. Now if only those cheapo's over at the PLA will cough up the money to build two more prototypes with all the bells and wistles on it. A multi mode AESA radar, single piece glass cockpit, new generation electronic cueing helmets, EOTS sensors, redesigned airframe and more powerful engines with "dog tooth" nozzle's for radar deflection (here I was thinking of the RD-33MK that has 7% more thrust than the older RD-33's and is non smoky and since China and Russia are such good buddy buddies these days I'm pretty sure they are willing to sell those to them).

Good Post Franklin, and you're most definitely right, the J-31 is a very practical airplane, that promises low observability, at least some element of super-maneuverability, and with the right engines and avionics, it could easily be a very legitimate A2A defender of the CV BG, and a credible A2G bird with the right weapons??? Just a good honest airplane, and a good honest post brother. I have been an early and faithful proponent of this aircraft, it appears extremely well balanced in the "eye ball engineering" dept?
