Purely speculative, but, any chance we could see an inversion of history and see Russia buying fighter aircraft from China? J-31 would be a great replacement for the Mig-29 and could free-up Mig to focus resources on developing the Scat.

Unlikely. They have the technology, capability and capacity.

No doubt!
Questions is, do they have the program? It seems that the RAF is planning to acquire the Mig-35 to fulfill its future the medium fighter role requirements. As both the J-31 and Mig-35 programs progress, it will be interesting to observe their competition in the international market.

NOPE! Sorry Comrade, I meant NYET! they might steal it, but they won't buy it, LOL, the Russians are wanting to sell you their stuff, so they can build more neat stuff for themselves, like PAK-FA! When it gets right down to it, the Russians don't really have a shortage of design genius, or even production capability, witness the Mig-29 and the Su-27, two gorgeous high performance aircraft, honestly the PAK-FA will be more of the same.

Some talk out of Zhuhai is indeed Russia may surprise many by becoming a major buyer of J31.
I don't think it would be a big surprise. Looking at T50, Russia can surely use some help from J31 tech especially in stealth.

In what way is the T50 inferior to the J-31 that the Russians would need technical assistance?

Much has been made regarding T-50's perceived "substandard" underside stealth shaping (i.e.: engine nacelles), I think that's what he's getting at. (Of course, I think it was an obvious and deliberate design choice rather than some inherent inability to shape it in a more stealthy way.)

Personally I try to avoid mentioning direct comparisons because it just ends up eliciting pissing contests.

At this point, FC-31 is so far from even having a legitimate engine solution that i think any such talk is way too disrespectful to the Russian aerospace industry.

^ I'm inclined to agree with that statement, but I think confusion directed at T-50's strange underside shaping is definitely valid as well.
