"Heavily reliant". Egypt just get a couple billion in US military aid a year. They got $1.3 billion USD in 2021. Same funding they got since 1987. They purchase multiple times that amount in military equipment with their own money. The IMF loans are a lot more relevant. They owe the IMF like $12 billion USD. But now that they are part of BRICS I doubt reliance on the IMF will continue long term.

IMF still under heavy US influence. Egypt will definitely need more money for just buying food to cope with growing population. If Egypt no longer able to import food they will be crush. I think US wants to ditched Egypt if they have alternative to Suez canal.

Egypt import their food from Russia. Do you think they will be using dollars to buy Russian wheat? And their main supplier of loans is the Gulf States. Not the US.

The current situation where Israel is a major power in the region is an historic anomaly.
Well they have the world's leading superpower as their sugardaddy, ofc no one can go out on a limb and oppose them. And the current Egyptian regime is the most Israel-friendly regime they've ever had; its not like they have the military might to match the IDF anyway. At the end of the day, all those shiny equipment they're procuring are nothing but parade toys.

In November, Saudi Arabia also signed a local currency swap agreement with China worth about $7bn. China is the largest customer of Saudi oil, purchasing 86mn tonnes of the fuel last year, part of which observers estimate, based on data from the People’s Bank of China, is settled in renminbi. “There is a hidden motivation for the increased investment relationship between China and Saudi Arabia,” said Chris Vassallo, a researcher at the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis. “The kingdom is maybe sitting on a large pile of renminbi from selling oil to China, the uses of which are not manifold. One way is to spend on Chinese goods and services.”
The kingdom’s hunt for global tech companies to help upgrade its economy and diversify away from oil has coincided with a funding crunch and weak domestic sales for Chinese tech companies, which have turned to the Middle East for investment and new revenue streams. The Saudi strategy echoes the tactics of local governments in China towards foreign companies decades ago, granting market access in exchange for training local teams and investment.
btw, I have no issue with Saudi Arabia doing this. And i'm not concerned with Chinese tech companies providing some know how for market access

This is a win/win situation for both sides

Three optical cables (

) in the Red Sea have been mysteriously cut. Suspect unconfirmed, but current speculation is that a British ship Rubymar "unintentionally" dragged the 3 cables.
The successful targeting of the four cables, which are believed to belong to the AAE-1, Seacom, EIG, and TGN systems, marks a serious disruption of communications between Europe and Asia.

Most of the immediate harm will be absorbed by the

and India, Globes said.
  • The AAE-1 cable connects East Asia to Europe via Egypt, connecting China to the West through countries such as Pakistan and Qatar.
  • The Europe India Gateway (EIG) cable system connects southern Europe to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, the UAE, and India.
  • The Seacom cable connects Europe, Africa, and India, and is connected to South Africa.
China Mobile has agreed to repair AAE-1 by March 15. No ETR on other two cables.
Cable ships cost $60-100 million each, and the area is so dangerous, it looks like China is the only country capable of repairing the damages.

If this is true, another huge win for Chinese infrastructure reputation in the region.

Rubymar and other ships owned by the same company (up to the repair cost of the cables + inconvenience fees) should be seized, scavenged, and resold as recompense.
