We get a lot of weather reports from various members in the "Real Life," thread. I thought it would be good to put them into a single thread in the future.

This is a place where members from around the world can let us know about weather conditions where they live, and post pictures of significant weather events they witness.

Pics form members around the world regarding the weather they witness would be a neat thing for all of us to be able to see.

I will start with some pictures of our early snow storm here in SW Idahpo that is still ongoing.

Although all of Idaho has pretty strong winbters, SW IDaho near the capitol of Boise is usually considered the "banana belt," of Idaho. winters are not qutie as extreme in the valleys here as they are in most other parts of the state. Thught ey would still be judged very cold by many other standards.

Anyhow, we got a forecast a few days ago of an early snow, maybe 1-3 inches. It has turned into quite a boit more than that with my own area now at 10" of snow on the ground. I took the following pictures on my way to work this morning:

Well, my post indicates where. It is SW Idaho near Boise, Idaho, on the west side of the state near the Oregon and Nevada borders..

We always get some good snows each winter...but this one is definitely a little eraliy.

They are saying this has broken the record for this part of the state for the most snow this erly.

Well, my friend, it is still too soon to say if we will have a white Christmas.

We are a good six weeks away from Christmas and we could easily warm up and melt it all away. We may also have other snow storms before then too...so it is just too soon to say.

But it is a good start.

In this part of the United States, the Intermountain West, it is very dry environment. Most of our moisture comes in the late Fall, Winter and early Spring. The snows in the mountains provide us with irrigation waters in the summer. If we did not have the dams to store that water (and generate electricity) we would not be able to support many people at all out here.

So, having good snows is important because it builds up the snow pack in the mountains that will then gradually melt in the late spring and early summer, be caught by the dams, and then apportioned for irrigation water throughout the summer and fall.

I am always glad to see good snows for that reason.

Re: Member's Weather Reports

Here it is at 8AM Sunday, November 16, 2014, and we bottomed out at a -4 degrees (F), that's -20 degrees (C), this morning. A record low for November in the SW Idaho valleys (it has gotten colder in the mountains) since they started keeping records around here in the 1870s.

Our 10 inches of snow was also a record November snow fall, shattering the last one by almost seven inches...again, for the valleys. They get more (a lot more) in the mountains.

A Dutch meteo service published on its website an article that said a statistical relationship was found between early snow cover in Siberia North of 60 degrees and cold winters in Europe and North America. This time the snow cover there is particularly early and extensive. The statistics do not extent over many years, starting with the weather satellites in the sixties but they do looks convincing. They expect a winter as bad as the last one in North America, but they don't bet on it, and a cold one in The Netherlands too, where last time the winter just didn't happen.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Today, the sky is clear and the sun is bright but not very hot though. At least, it's not burning as it used to be during the months of March thru July. Given the climate of Cambodia, 30 C (86 F) at noon is acceptable. I just feel strange that there is still rain by the end of this week and next week!!
