What's with the "header' taking up half the screen? Sometimes it doesn't but most of the time it's half the screen blocked from view. I have to scroll up and down to see any pictures in their entirety.

some of them have a minimize option which is nice. Click on the ^ and it generally disappears assuming that the ad google generated allows such.

Yeah, I tried that but it happened more after that. No ad, just blue. It seems to have lessened after a while logged off.

I started and ran a forum of my own for about a month, moderated a Friends forum for a couple months too. both defunct
Both were more blog with a half dozen members who really just grouped together.
Still was an educational experience. One of the things I learned was these set ups are often prebuilt and can be buggy they are especially sensitive to any mis step and it’s often easy to double enter something. They also depend on ads to keep the lights on so to speak. You call it spam. To me it’s what allows me to be here without a pay wall.

Blogs and forums have different coding. The ad placement is based on the skin and hosting base. Some offer a lot of options some very few where others can be tailored to a wide degree.
