Because there's no guarantee they'll either be willing or available to help when Saudi Arabia needs them the most. Remember it takes time to get men and equipment over. Foreign support is no good if Saudi Arabia were defeated before they could arrive in sufficient numbers to help. So of course they need expensive equipment to protect themselves.
