RUSSIA appears to have sent two of its most modern stealth fighter jets to Syria.

Footage circulating out of Syria today appears to show two of the distinctive aircraft arriving at Russia’s Khmeimim air force base on the shores of the Mediterranean.

As they came in to land, a Su-35 fighter is seen to swoop past protectively.

The unverified footage has interesting implications, if true.

Moscow has been swept up in scandal as its citizens

in a clash with United States aircraft and artillery earlier this month.

It denies it ever happened.

But, on Monday, Russia’s foreign minister abruptly warned President Donald Trump

by imposing its will on Syria.

Even in itself, such a move involving the stealth fighter is odd.

The secretive Su-57, also known as the T-50 PAK-FA, is still in its prototype phase.

It first flew in 2010. Less than a dozen functioning prototypes exist.

It’s being touted by Moscow as its “F-22 killer” — a stealth fighter of sufficient fighting power to take on the best in the US air force fleet, and win.

But its development has not been without problems.

UNCONFIRMED DEPLOYMENT

According to Syrian media and observers near Russia’s Khmeimim air force base, the two Su-57s were escorted by four Su-35 fighters and four Su-25 strike aircraft, as well as an A-50U radar command-and-control platform.

If correct, the stealth fighters will be joining a selection of Russia’s most advanced strike aircraft already based there.

The arrival of a flight of Su-34 “Fullback” strike aircraft in Syria in September 2015 caused quite a stir. The modern twin-seat bomber is highly capable, carrying a significant selection of electronics and weaponry.

And the Su-35 “Flanker” is an extremely manoeuvrable fighter that represents the pinnacle of non-stealth combat technology.

Moscow has been eager to tout the performance of both aircraft in Syria to potential markets around the world.

Is the arrival of the Su-57 part of a similar marketing strategy for a nation struggling under the weight of international sanctions?

Or is it a response to recent encounters between the US and Russia in the skies and on the ground of war-torn Syria?

Interestingly, the apparent move comes just days after Russia’s Deputy Defence Minister Yuri Borisov told reporters during a visit to the Komsomolski-on-Amur manufacturing plant — which assembles the stealth fighter — that the Su-57 would “

POWER PLAY

The fall of the cities of Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria represented the evisceration of Islamic State’s influence.

Only a handful of outposts remain under the control of the black-flagged jihadists.

And with their common enemy, the region’s multitude of political and religious factions have once again begun to turn upon themselves.

NATO ally Turkey has attacked Syrian Kurds. The US-backed Kurds were attacked by pro-President Assad Syrian forces on February 7. And now pro-regime forces have joined Kurds in the north to defend against the Turkish incursion.

Amid this mayhem have been several “incidents” involving US and Russian forces.

The Eurphrates River is a demarcation line agreed to by the two superpowers. US aircraft operate to its east. Russians to the west.

And a permanent hotline has been established to avoid accident, and facilitate “de-escalation” if something goes wrong.

Which it still does.

Several times last year, Moscow

by US and Coalition fighter aircraft. It even boasted that US F-22 “Raptor” stealth fighters had b

.

US accounts, of course, differ. They say the Russian aircraft were operating on its side of the Euphrates, and nonlethal techniques were used to turn them back.

But one encounter between US and Russian forces apparently did turn lethal earlier this month.

Some 500 pro-regime Syrian forces launched a surprise attack on a Syrian Democaratic Force outpost near the city of Deir al-Zor on the east bank of the Euphrates.

Accounts differ. But the most disturbing claim states that about 200 mercenaries supplied by a Moscow-based security firm were killed or wounded in a devastating counter-attack launched by US aircraft and artillery.

SWIFT, UNSEEN

If Russian Su-57 stealth fighters really have arrived in Syria, it could represent a dangerous new escalation for the already tumultuous region.

It poses further potential for ‘accident’.

The United States sent its radar-invisible F-22 into Syria early last year.

It was considered a surprise move at the time.

Now Russian combat aircraft can also be roaming the skies, unseen.

If they follow the previous pattern of engaging in quick raids across the Euphrates, US and Coalition forces may again get caught up in an unintentional clash.

What can be certain is both sides will take the opportunity to observe as much as they can about each other’s stealth aircraft — their strengths, and weaknesses.

Just in case.

But the Su-37 is barely combat capable.

Just two are believed to have their avionics and sensor suite in a suitable state. And only one has the modern engines necessary to make it a truly 5th generation fighter.

Ambitious plans for large orders of the stealth fighter have been steadily scaled back in recent years. The first batch of just 12 production models is due to begin delivery in 2019.

I'm going to repeat my little mantra,, "the Russians are Master Showmen", flying the SU-57 to Syria is no doubt a serious message,, its "posturing" likely in response to our "two ships" in the "Black Sea".. every move has to be "countered" and the Russians love to play those games, such as harassing EP-3's with SU-27s.. and endangering the lives of the US aircrews..

The Russians are a lot like the dear Mayor of Chicago, who reminded his team to never "let a crisis go to waste", and make no mistake, the Russians will continue to play the confusion and crisis in Syria, just as they played the crisis in former Soviet Georgia and the Ukraine,, they are "ballsy", but they are "crazy like a fox",,, and they escaped serious consequences under the last two US administrations..

President Putin is very good at these little negotiations, but the current administration is not willing to be trifled with, and will take serious action, we have and will continue to put aircraft and US troops in place to prevent attacks on Syrian Forces who have been fighting ISIS, and fighting for their own freedom against a murderous dictator. The Russians flying SU-57s to Syria may indicate they would like to go "tactical" and prove the SU-57 will live up to its advertised capabilities,,, but I doubt they have any real desire to tangle with US Forces, particularly with F-22's that have been sent to gather and play AWAC's intelligence, and to protect coalition forces from those Syrian SAM launchers..

so, we shall see as Master Jeff Head says,,, the US has made every effort to de-conflict with the Russians, but no doubt the Russians would like to see if the SU-57s really are effective,, I'm rather certain they are no match with F-22's or future F-35's,,, but they are certainly likely to be as dangerous as those SU-35s to our own 4th Gens and that is why F-22's were deployed to this region initially.

so thank you Siege for posting and allowing us to observe this latest in a series of moves designed to "up the ante" so to speak! this does bear close watching!

Well, apparently Russian AF thinks different.
But I am puzzled myself, wtf is going on. I mean seriously, these are test subjects, not even 12 pre series craft which are yet to appear.

Sounds like BMPT in Syria(and others) set a precedent for Russian evaluation practice.

I guess the arrival of PAKFAs is the Russian "pull out from Syria" from Dec 12, 2017
News Of The Hour at gazeta.ru right now (

) is the Kremlin said the Russian pull out from Syria had begun (some MP Battalion came back to Russia today)

if there was a large scale withdrawal now (and if Mr. Assad was able to hold up), I would be proven wrong about what I said in Syria Thread long time ago, which was Russia is bogged down in Syria according to me

(the funny part was Obama had said it earlier than me, but I was unaware of it while posting LOL)

US Air Force 'must' retrofit so that LockMart makes even more profit out of all copies including the oldest, huh? that's ludicrous (but real world hahaha) and the US Air Force would be better off if it ditched the old Lots and used the resources on moving on in the program ... is what I think

actually they're NOT sold on it, NO BIG ORDER. USAF wanted 750 Raptors, and would have had them if not for the goofus pollies screwing around, but the Russian AF is NOT convinced this is an F-22 beater! (its NOT) that's why the powers that be insisted they at least try 12, and yes they would like to sell a bunch of these!

now its a great 4++++ version of a Flanker, but the SU-35 has orders, and is rolling off the assembly line, hell, the Chinese are convinced its a better airplane!

I'm rather certain they are there, Call it the Spring of 2018 white sale of SU-57s,,, its a sales tour, hey if they could shoot down a couple of F-22's,, they would, but I don't think that's gonna happen,,, they're trying to show India who's got the greatest 5 Gen!,, they still want that Indian Money!

When the prototypes came out, many internet observers thought the real deal will be much more "completed" with stealthy coatings and better surface detail. Now the final version seems almost identical to the prototypes, these optimists are silent. Su-57 is no stealth fighter and it's very doubtful it has good enough instruments and weapons to detect and fight stealth fighters effectively. At least not yet (if they did, China and US + NATO will likely have similar technologies and there'd be no point for any country to develop or acquire stealth fighters yet all of them are in a frenzy to do just that!). The move to place Su-57 in the region is a PR move as well as a counter to the presence of F-22s. Even if engagements occur between these two, the results will be kept hidden or one side will deny everything. It will be interesting to see the outcome of F-22 vs Su-57. But scary at the same time. If we see China placing orders anytime in future, we will know that Su-57 is absolute kickass for sure. If we don't see that, it doesn't tell us anything.
