Russian-Indian pipeline?

GOA, India, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- The Russian and Indian governments may be interested in working together on getting natural gas piped from the former to the latter, a joint statement read.

Russian natural gas company Gazprom sent delegations to a summit for five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. During

in India, held in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the energy company signed a memorandum of understanding related to natural gas.

"The memorandum reflects the interest of the parties in jointly exploring the routes for pipeline gas supplies from Russia and other countries to India," the Russian energy company said in a statement.

India has wanted an Iran-India natural gas pipeline for several years now. Russia has been involved in several such underwater natural gas pipeline projects. Contrary to what is explored in the article I doubt the Russians will consider the Myanmar route or the Tajikistan routes. The first route goes through China, and the second route goes through disputed and highly mountainous territory. So, in my opinion, the best route is an under sea route from Iran to India and a pipeline though the Caspian Sea or Turkmenistan to Iran. This both avoids the unstable zones and the past obstacles to the creation of a pipeline from Iran to India.

It's a wild guess of mine. But if that happens it will significantly change the geopolitics of energy in the Asian economic sphere.

Russia's Gazprom says Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline construction on schedule

The construction of Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline is proceeding according to an agreed schedule, chairman of the board of directors of Russian energy giant Gazprom said Friday.

"It's going fine ... everything is going according to the schedule that has been agreed upon," Viktor Zubkov was quoted by Russian media as saying.

Zubkov added that no serious obstacles in the implementation of the project have been seen so far.

Nord Stream 2 is a joint venture of Gazprom and five European companies.

It is designed to deliver 55 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas annually to the European Union via the Baltic Sea and Germany, and is expected to be put into operation by the end of 2019.

There were more recent news than just that. TurkStream's pipeline construction was completed. Then there is the expansion on their LNG gas export capabilities.

No, the article from Forbes I quoted mentioned China investing in Novatek's Arctic LNG 2 project in Northern Siberia, to come online in 2023. Plus the already operating Yamal LNG plant which can supply China through the Northern Sea (Arctic) route.

There have also been discussions about the Altai pipeline which would help supplement the Turkmenistan gas flows. Or building a natural gas pipeline from Sakhalin to China.

I think the Chinese natural gas consumption is still not at a high enough level to support these other pipeline projects. But as China's clean air initiatives grow I think, at least in Northern China, the demand for natural gas will increase. If you compare Chinese natural gas consumption with leading European industrial economies the Chinese are still mostly burning coal. But this is problematic in dense urban regions like those around Beijing because it contributes to air pollution. I think it is quite likely these will be replaced with natural gas combined heat and power plants similar to what happened in the USA and Germany in the 1990s. In other regions which have lots of wind power or solar capability the natural gas flows will also be helpful to help load balance the grid since most of China's hydropower plant capacity is quite far away from the main populated areas in the coastal regions.

Construction of two 1,139-m-long underwater tunnels for the China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline has been completed and passed checks, constructors said. The pipeline is expected to provide China with 38 billion cubic meters of natural gas from

Right. But one thing the articles sometimes don't point out is that the projected capacity of the Power of Siberia pipeline isn't 38 bcm (billion cubic meters) but 48 bcm.

The thing is, while the pipes maybe be able to carry that much gas, the Russians won't be able to supply more than 38 bcm in the near future because the gas fields in the Altai under development can only supply that much. In fact the initial supply is supposed to be 30 bcm. However if they do add supplies from Sakhalin or expand their gas exploration on the Altai then the pipeline should eventually reach its full capacity. Chinese gas use has been growing quite significantly so eventually even if they use the full capacity of the pipeline it won't be enough. That's why the Russians wanted the Chinese to commit to the Western route which can carry natural gas from the Yamal natural gas prospecting area which is where the majority of their natural gas is situated.

China and Pakistan are in the way when you think of Russia and India pipeline. 12 Indian war planes bombed terrorist camps inside Pakistan. It's game over.
