Re: Russia sells S-500 systems to China

Again? Wasn't there news about Russia selling s-400s a while ago?

Is this another su-35?

So Russia really sold S-400 to China for real this time.

The original "rumor" was that S-400 was developed with Chinese money - and the chinese use the experience and technology to upgrade their HQ-9. Some rumor even say the HQ-19 IS the S-400. Those were rumor from at least as far back as 2007.

Apparently news about the S-400 arms deal with China has surfaced again but this time it's confirmed by Antoly Isaijin, the chief executor of Rosoboronexport. Probably not a rumour after all, but still no official news from the Chinese side. Still this is the best credibility of such a deal made public as of now. If the deal is certain, delivery might be extended because Russia's armed forces needs to be fully supplied first.

The chief executive of the Russian state-run arms trader Rosoboronexport has confirmed that China clinched a contract with his company for the purchase of the S-400 air defense systems.

China has signed a contract with the Russian state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport for the purchase of the S-400 air defense systems, the company's chief executive Anatoly Isaikin said in an interview with the Russian daily Kommersant.

"I will not disclose the details of the contract, but yes, China has indeed become the first buyer of this sophisticated Russian air defense system. It underlines once again the strategic level of our relations," Isaikin said, when asked whether it was true that Beijing signed a contract for the purchase of four S-400 divisions in September 2014.

Isaykin also said that "many countries" want to buy the S-400 systems, but added that the manufacterer, VKO Almaz-Antey, is obliged to first deliver them to the Russian Defense Ministry.

"Despite the expansion of production capacities, it's difficult to deliver these air defense systems to several countries. In this regard, China will be the first customer," Isaikin said.

Asked whether Russian companies are afraid of cooperating with their Chinese partners, Isaikin said that he believes that if Russia works for the benefit of China, it "works for its own benefit as well."

The S-400 Triumf is a new generation anti-aircraft weapon system capable of engaging any aerial target, including aircraft, helicopters, drones, as well as cruise and tactical ballistic missiles with a maximum speed of 4,800 meters per second. Currently, there are nine Russian anti-aircraft missile regiment equipped with the S-400 systems, which were put on service in April 2007.

I think Russia is still on the cutting edge of radar technology and so is their rocket science. They had been able to introduce game changing technologies in both fields and there is no reason to doubt they still can.

I would believe when it comes from the Chinese side. Honestly I don't see China would do that, Chinese SAM system is already very advanced. I'd be better to invest the money (billions US$) to develop (R & D) further of HQ-9 series (HQ-9C/D ?)

That's what I was thinking as well.. I mean I would be really concern if China feels the need to acquire the S400 because it means the HQ9 is not up to snuff and cannot fill the capability gap that HQ 9 could.

S500 sure.. but I've always thought the latest generation HQ 9 series with extended range and ABM capabilities is almost similar in advancement as the S400 etc or at least very close.

Turkey evaluated S400 as well and I'm sure they wouldn't have even considered HQ 9 (regardless of other fine prints/political meanderings) if it was much inferior to the S400/Patriot PAC 3 and the ones they wanted was the export version that I assume is 'slightly' less capable than what the Chinese would use themselves..

OTOH this report sounds relatively reliable so who knows!

The only thing I can think of is this deal(assuming it's real) is part of a much larger package or that this deal will be part of some sort of trade agreement including energy, gas/oil maybe even rabbits.

Russia doesn't even have a DF-21D or the WU-14 HGV programs equivalent.
