This thread will be for the development of PRC/PLAN Rail Gun and Laser technology and Systems.

It will be similar to the:

US Navy Laser and Rail Gun Development Thread[https://www.sinodefenceforum.com/us-laser-and-rail-gun-development-news.t5879/

Use this thread for news about Chinese Laser and Rail Gun development, including new systems, tests, pictures, etc.

------------------------------- THREAD STARTS --------------------------------

Recent aggregation of news from Henri K.:

On November 13, 2015, an official CASIC article indicated that Institute 206 has made a breakthrough in the development of a CIWS railgun.

However, this shouldn't come as a surprise since the same institute has already published papers regarding the development of railguns and coilguns in February and October.

According to Henri's sources, the Chinese have formalized a naval railgun project by funding an university and and aerospace groups. He does not know if the railgun CIWS is related to this or not.

It seems that the Chinese started development of railguns very early. In 1988, a prototype railgun-coilgun hybrid, dubbed the 303EMG and developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Plasma Physics, shot a 30.2-gram ball at a velocity of 3 km/s. One of the 25 MW compensated pulse alternators was used in multiple gun testbeds.

Apart from Chinese Academy of Sciences, the 27th Institute of CETC is also working on the railgun.

In an article published on February 25, 2014, it was mentioned that a deputy commander of the PLAAF visited a laboratory and attended a test shot. "发射的震撼效果得到张副司令一行的高度肯定,并鼓励课题组尽快将科研成果形成装备,为武器装备建设做出更多贡献。"

According to Henri, many documents confirm that the Chinese are working on simultaneous railgun and coilgun projects. Henri tells us to stay tuned.

There is a:

US Laser and Rail Gun Development Thread
https://www.sinodefenceforum.com/us-laser-and-rail-gun-development-news.t5879/

Folks, right now, the only advanced program, where lasers are actually being fired from ships at sea to down drones and small rockets, as well as destroy small craft, is with the US Navy program.

In a similar vein, the only advanced Rail Gun Program where rail guns have been fired against armor and other targets on the firing range and where a rail gun is about to be tested at sea (2016) is the US Navy rail gun program.

If you want to see pictures of a program that is actually being tested in the field at this time...go to that threrad.

If you have news and information about PRC/PLAN development...use this thread.

This thread is being renamed to the PRC/PLAN Laser and Rail Gun Development Thread so that the programs can be monitored here on SD as they develop.

This is allegedly the railgun testing facility:

That looks a lot more like an Electromagnetic Catapult Launch Test Facility to me.

Does look like it could be both, but I think if it were rail gun it would likely sit within the cover of the blue roofed building and shoot "downrange" during tests... if it were an EM catapult, I imagine the "range" might be more continuous with the blue roof building.

Pop3 mentioned the two institutes responsible for Rail Gun research is located in Beijing. While the Catapult facility is located in Shanghai, and EMALS research facility is located in Wuhan which the google earth pics shown here. But since the Ma team is responsible for both EMALS and Rail Gun research. Maybe it's possible some EMALS and rail gun testing facility are in the same area.
