PLAN Zubr Large Air Cushion Landing Craft

Type 081 is the first 4 units of the class and Type 081A are the ones since. There is nothing that substantiate the LHD is Type 081. More likely, it will be Type 07x like all the other amphibious ships where x between 5 and 8.

One of these days I really like to know how these designations come about because it's confusing. At a glance one would think a certain numeric would mean a certain types of vessels like 05x = destroyers/frigates yet 056 is more of a missile boat/corvette, 09s = subs, 07Xs = amphibious, 08Xs = mine warfare etc etc but that is not the case.

There is actually a Type 071 class of icebreakers and Type 058 minesweeper and many more like these

Zubrs indeed are looking awesome

I believe the recent MLP we have seen from China is going to be used to transport Zubrs just wondering if they will fit

That means the MLP can take the Zubr so far then launch it close to area of interest

Zubr have, at best, a limited range. So MLP ships would certainly be a suitable way to transport them long distances.

"China appears to be developing a Mobile Landing Platform (MLP) similar in concept to that being built by the United States, reports the Beijing-based Sina Military Network.

Photos of a Chinese military vessel resembling the US Navy's MLP were recently released by the Chinese military magazine Modern Ships, leading to speculation that China is trying to develop its own "floating base."

The MLP is a type of amphibious assault ship described by Sina Military as "half-submarine and half-boat" because it has a semi-submersible deck for ease of transferring cargo and equipment.

The main purpose of the MLP is to transport heavy weaponry and combat supplies as well as act as a transfer point between large ships and small landing craft. It is different to ordinary landing ships and amphibious assault ships in that it is used primarily for transport as opposed to combat.

Analysts believe MLPs would significantly boost the People's Liberation Army Navy's strategic and combat capabilities, whether it is to conduct large-scale landing operations in a potential conflict with Taiwan or to assist in patrols and law enforcement in the South China Sea, where it is engaged in territorial disputes with countries including Vietnam and the Philippines."
