I wonder why they are still producing Type 072s. SHouldn't they be focusing on the Type 071?

producing 072s doesn't necessarily cut into funding or production for 071.

Also, a 28,000 ton LPD like 071 fills a different role to a 7000 ton LST like 072A and it appears the PLAN still values the capability which 072As bring.

I think the PLAN also used the 072 on a couple of occasions to play bumper ships (not sure if it was this class of ship that cut ahead of a US Navy cruiser no long ago). Something I don't think you would want to do with a 071.

They are doing both.

They just finished another Type 071, are building a fifth...and my understanding is that there will be a sixth.

The Type 072A is smaller and can work for the PLAN for smaller operations.

They could also be used in concert with the Type 071s.

This latest version is a very decent LST type vessel.

More Type 072 III under construction

There seems to be no end to these units the amphibious forces must be happy
Could that be the latest two Type 072A that we knew they were building fitting out?

982 Fitting Out
983 Launched

Type 072 III building stopped some time ago. See the first post in the thread. They have built twelve Type 072A vessels which started building after the Type 072 III.
