Asif, I believe you are thinking about DDG 167, Shenzhen, the single Type 051B vessel. It has a dual hanger.


The Type 051C vessels (two of them) were designed as area coverage AAW vessels and gave up the hanger spaces for the aft VLS cells...though they still have the helo pad.

If they would replace the older AAW launcher forward with an 18 cell FL-3000N, they would improve that vessel markedly.

Did 167 ever undergo any overhaul? If not, there's plenty that can be done. New FL-3000N, H/PJ87 100, two 730s, and cover up the sides for better stealth characteristics. She can be a very capable platform with those upgrades.

As you can see from the picture, the original 100 mm turret (Type 79A or H/PJ33) has been replaced by the new Type 99.

I do not think the PLAN will put much money into this single ship, but it will certainly get a mid-life update like the two Type 052. That will essentially boil down to replacing the four 37 mm turrets by two 730.

Having a Type 051C grouped together with this single Type 051B would be a strong grouping.

The 051C providing area AAW defense, witht the 051B having the stronger ASuW and ASW capabilities.

I think adding the 730s would be very good for this vessel, but also, a FN-3000L forward (if it could be fitted) would also significantly improve its AAW defense overall in the short to close in ranges. It is a relative young vessel, and will be around probably for another 20-25 years.

Not a bad suggestion. Add a TAS and with the existing dual hanger/helos, it certainly would field strong ASW capabilities. Grouping the trio would make a solid escort group for either a carrier or a Type 071.

A very optimum, allbeit somewhat heavy, escort for the carrier would be:

2 x Type 052C/D DDGs
1 x Type 051C DDG
1 x Type 051B DDG
2 x Type 054A FFGs
1 x Type 093 SSN

If a couple of Type 017 LPDs were sailing into an operation expected to be contested, then a good escort for them would be:

1 x Type 052C/D DDGs
1 x Type 051C DDG
1 x Type 051B DDG
1 x Type 054A FFG
1 x Type 093 SSN

The fact that the PLAN will have more than enough vessels to put these type of escort groups together for a CV or several LPDs speaks volumes to the progress the PLAN has made in the last ten years.

FN-3000L can be fitted to a Jianghu, it can't pretty much fit anything thing.
